[rebel-builders] Soundproofing/exhaust system/ MAMs new business profile
Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 7:51 pm
Hi all,
?? Regarding sound insulation, I chose to use the 3/4" material from ACS. (rember this was done in 1994). I insulated everything forward of the "A" pillar, except the floor. That is?the firewall, sidewalls, and the bottom of the glareshield.
? The most noise I get is from the tail cone, just try flying without the rear curtain. Mine is actually a removeable insulated bulkhead.?
? Second to that is partly my own cause. When I built the swingup doors I made the glass about 3" taller for better down visibility. The 1/4" really vibrates from the propwash. Someday I'll figure out away to reinforce those, or even go to thicker material to stop the vibration that you can feel in the window.
?On another note, I just replaced my original exhaust system that was made of mild steel. The ends of the pipes were corroded and I wasn't comfortable with what was under the heat muff. I also cracked? one just below the flange makeing it hard to repair. Early on I had replace 1/2 the system with stainless and that is still in good shape. I'm going to try and repair that (in my spare time) if I can find the right parts.
? All that to say I ordered a exhaust system from Vetterman exhausts the primary supplier for the RV bunch. I did have to do a little adjusting to make the system work for me but?it is a quality system, all manderal bent with ball sockets to help relieve the stresses. 795.00 plus shipping. I'll still have to work out the heater system but I'm back flying for the rest of the season. Take a look at his web site if interested and he will work with you. Not sure if he wants to get into Rebel specific stuff as he already has 31 different systems for the RV's.
? Last but certainly not least thanks to Bob P for keeping things positive regarding MAM. I'd sure hate to own an orphan!!

Several questions
1) How much of your plane did you insulate? Firewall? Area forward of
the doors? Or more. From what I read most of the noise comes from the
area forward of the doors.
2) I can not find the particular insulation in 24 x 24 sheets on the
Airtex website at: http://www.airtexinteriors.com/catalogue/misc.htm
3) What was the weight of the material you used or do you have more
information on the particular product?
4) Has anyone tried the SoundEx Products (www.soundedproducts.com)?
I have been impressed with their products as displayed at Sun n'Fun
and they appear to be light in weight and provide good soundproofing

I recieved a box of airtex insulating material from a friend and did my
Elite. It is fireproof aviation approved and works extremely well, its thin
and preglued.
Unfortunately, I ran out and had to buy one 24 x 24 sheet Ouch its expensive
(38 a piece) but you can talk in my Elite at idle no headsets no more oil
can rattly noises got to easier on the riveting too.

Dave
Just a thought, the sound insulation will probably perform
better if it is attached to the panel. If it is a material
that depends on its mass to damp the sound transmission of a
panel (changing the sound transmission
impedance) it needs to "modify" the movement of
the panel as the sound travels through it. I'd look at
something like the 3M upholstry spray adhesives as an
option. They can be had through automotive body supply
jobbers.
Another source of materials is Dynamat.
http://www.dynamat.com/technical_technical.html
their Tacmat is used in aircraft.
Cheers,
Dave

don't want to promote corrosion? Should I glue or leave
it friction fit?_________________________________________________________________Any comments?
