[rebel-builders] Mam Info --> News on Murphy's new business model
Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 7:51 pm
Well .... OK.... Before the rumours really start flying,
I'm going to jump in here with some more information
on new developments at the factory. As I've said before,
Murphy will be staying in business, and you will get parts !
I'll send another email a bit later with more detail.

For starters, here's a reply from Stephane to an
already concerned customer :
(He forwarded it to me, with permission to post ...)

Dear XXXXXX,
Â
I hope that you are well.
Â
The statements made by Craig are pretty accurate but do not describe the
entire business plan. Please rest assured that we will continue to support
our product.
Â
One inaccurate statement is: Â "He did said that they will make kits or parts
if they get a request for 10 of that item." Â It would be unthinkable to wait
for 10 orders of the same part. If you need a Murphy part, we will make it.
We will combine the request with other part requests that use the same
equipment to maximise efficiencies.
Â
At the moment, we are establishing a network of private distributors that
will take over the retail end of the aircraft kit industry. In Canada, for
example, Bob  Patterson is the representative. We also have a distributor in
France, Belgium, Australia, Russia, Italy, Spain and are working hard at
expanding this group of factory representatives.
Â
In sum, they will be dealing with the retail sales. By combining their
orders, we will make more efficient production runs and it will provide us
with an opportunity to actively pursue new markets. With the decreasing
sales of kits, we need to diversify to ensure the survival/profitability of
this company.
Â
We are a parts manufacturing company hence will manufacture all parts that
are needed by our customer both in the kit and general aviation. We do
however plan on phasing out the sale of items that we do not manufacture.
Since we cannot compete with companies such as Aircraft Spruce when it comes
to pricing, we will not sell these items but provide the customer with how
to contact our suppliers.
Â
I hope that this will ease your mind a bit.

My wife and I were at Murphy this past week and received a nice, short
tour from Stephan. It was short because they have leased out about 75% of
their building to other companies and they have a pretty small area.
Stephan told us that they no longer consider themselves in the kit
aircraft business (his words). They are looking to find contracts with
other companies and the military for making parts, pieces, etc. He did
said that they will make kits or parts if they get a request for 10 of
that item. I had expected this busy, bustling, place with lots going on
but was a little disappointed at how little activity there was. I realize
they are doing what they need to do to survive but it makes me wonder
about potential resale value if they were to quit making parts entirely.
It was nice to put a face to the people on the phone, especially Jeff,
with whom I have a hot-line connection! (I get my $99 worth!)
On another note, a BIG thanks goes out to Walter Klatt and Dick Wampach.
In Langley, Walter met my wife and I at the airport and gave me my first
ride in a Rebel! We flew a round trip out to a lake for a water landing
and back. Folks, that Rebel gets in the air very quickly. Dick, in
Cameron Park welcomed us and gave a great tour of his Moose. He's got
some great ideas and is doing excellent work with some personal touches.
Dick, my favorites were the gears on the rudder pedal axle and the slick
way you worked out your cargo door. Man, I could have picked both their
brains for hours but I was traveling with others and had other
destinations to go to.
