My wife and I were at Murphy this past week and received a nice, short tour
from Stephan. It was short because they have leased out about 75% of their
building to other companies and they have a pretty small area. Stephan told
us that they no longer consider themselves in the kit aircraft business (his
words). They are looking to find contracts with other companies and the
military for making parts, pieces, etc. He did said that they will make
kits or parts if they get a request for 10 of that item. I had expected
this busy, bustling, place with lots going on but was a little disappointed
at how little activity there was. I realize they are doing what they need
to do to survive but it makes me wonder about potential resale value if they
were to quit making parts entirely. It was nice to put a face to the people
on the phone, especially Jeff, with whom I have a hot-line connection! (I
get my $99 worth!)
On another note, a BIG thanks goes out to Walter Klatt and Dick Wampach. In
Langley, Walter met my wife and I at the airport and gave me my first ride
in a Rebel! We flew a round trip out to a lake for a water landing and
back. Folks, that Rebel gets in the air very quickly. Dick, in Cameron
Park welcomed us and gave a great tour of his Moose. He's got some great
ideas and is doing excellent work with some personal touches. Dick, my
favorites were the gears on the rudder pedal axle and the slick way you
worked out your cargo door. Man, I could have picked both their brains for
hours but I was traveling with others and had other destinations to go to.
