Ian

As long as it has been refrigerated it should be fine for a few years.
Lots of discussion on this but apparently even the manufacturer
regularly retests the stuff and puts a new date on it. If frozen the
stuff lasts for years but stir the black hardener before you measure it
out and mix up a batch.

Ian, like Ken stated, make sure you mix the hardener before use, other than that the stuff should be fine. I gave an old 1/2 used can dated 1993 to an AME this summer to do a patch job on his floats. The stuff worked fine and most likely would have been fine in a fuel tank. I have numerous cans from current to 6 years old (stored in a fridge, not frozen) and just set them out in the sunshine for an hour or so, to let them warm up prior to mixing. Haven't had ANY vintages let me down yet!

Most likely it is still good - especially if you have stored it
in a freezer ....

If in doubt, stir up the hardener, then mix a small test batch.
Folks have used ProSeal that was years out of date, with acceptable
results ...

Ian,

Your pro-seal should be thick and hard to stir. You can buy pro-seal in
tubes and in different viscosities. I purchased some that was "brushable"
i.e. I could apply it with a paint brush. I troweled (actually used wooden
tongue depressors) the thick stuff on and then when it was dry went back
over it with the thinner mix. I have heard of people thinning the thick mix
with toluene. Have you checked the archives for pro-seal hints etc.?

Ian I have some pro seal made in june this year for my floats. its not as
thick as peanut butter before mixing but it stiffens up quite a bit as soon
as its mixed. The temperature that you're using it at makes a lot of
difference as well. To get it really runny I've popped it in the microwave
for a few seconds you have to work fast though as this drastically reduces
the pot life. To use a syringe cut the end off and make the hole as big as
you need. Hope this helps Drew.

Just a reminder - to spare yourself much grief, be sure to
mix a test batch to test curing & adhesion, BEFORE doing the 'real thing' !

Also, apparently it is the black HARDENER that settles in the
can, and needs stirring BEFORE measuring out & mixing....

Ian, do yourself a favour and buy a box of a 100 latex gloves. If you put 2
pairs on at a time, when the top layer gets too messy you can strip to the
clean ones and then put on a new pair over top! I did my first wings without
gloves and got tired of hidding my hands in my pockets for weeks afterwards
when out in public. Also the curing agents being absorbed though your skin
and lungs are not too great for your liver either! The gloves will take care
of one, LOTS of ventilation (or a fresh air hood system as I now use) will
take care of the other.

Ian get a box of latex gloves and change to new ones every time they get
sticky or you'll be cleaning Pro Seal off your plane and tools forever Drew

Thanks to everyone for their response regarding proseal.

I have purchased a pack of latex gloves which sure helps in keeping my hands
clean, but the whole process is still messy none the less.

I have taken Waynes tip regarding fresh air and now keep the garage doors
wide open.

SEALPAK was the tank sealant that Murphy provided with my kit. This stuff
could hold the San Andreus fault together.

unwilling to experiment !! It is MUCH easier to do it RIGHT, now,
than try to take it apart later to fix it !!!! (right, Wayne ??)

The only other material that meets the same MIL spec is
called SEALPAK, but again - why mix 'n match ??? You can order
ProSeal from Murphy, if all else fails (their distributor in OZ might
have some on hand ...)
