Hi gang:

Who has not cut their firewall back and is using a Lyc. O-320?

I don't want to cut mine back, but I wonder if there are any CG penalties,
etc...

Tim, are you planning on floats or skis ?? If so, cutting the fuse and
moving the firewall back is probably a good idea.

There ARE several Rebels flying with the F/W in the standard position
with O-320's, (and Subaru Legacy's !) and no major CG problem, BUT - the
airplane will fly better with a more aft CG position.
(competition gliders go to extremes to get aft CG, for better performance
at speed)

Floats, and especially skis, will give the aircraft a good pounding,
and having all that engine weight waaay out front gives it a long arm to
cause distortion in the F/W, side panels, etc., when smacked, so shortening
the front fuse is a good idea.
(There have been reports of hard impacts causing the top engine mounts
to move inward, distorting F/W & side panels. One fix is to add a 1" (or so)
square tube to the top inside of the F/W, connecting the 2 top engine
mounts.
This stops compression, and can carry an additional couple of tubes back
to support (triangulate) the instrument panel better.)

I agree that it changes the looks, and makes it harder to install
radios, but ...

FWIW, I know of at least ONE Rebel that had the F/W moved back a couple
of inches for an O-235-L2C, to improve handling and trim. (But it DID
have the battery on the firewall ...)

.....bobp

Don't forget to move the rudder pedals back a little extra, to give a
little more clearance for full rudder/full brake taxiing...
Also, since the seat is farther back, the skylights might need a little
extra thought...
