Steve, you really have me scratching my head now, especially with you having
such a "new" serial number. My personal Rebel 243R was purchased in 1993
shortly after the 1650 pound mods came out. It has a .063 main spar and then
you add a leading edge rib 6 inches from the wing root and a W-161 angle
bracket to bolt the root rib to the leading edge to get the 1650 gross (I
did these mods on the AULA Rebel I built also just to give it a little more
strength). I also have serial # 068 in the hanger (factory built 1992) and
just finished doing the root mod (extra rib & W-161 etc) for 1650 gross as
originally registered at 1550. This aircraft has a .063 main spar and the
extruded streamline lift struts (approx .090 wall), as does serial #105 that
I also have in the hanger for refurbishment. Mike Jones has serial #007 and
to the best of my knowledge his has .063 spars also and was originally a
1450lb aircraft (but he has done all the upgrades to 1650).

Steve, I hope you have the right main spars in your aircraft! In a e-mail to
the list ( titled:MAM mailing) on 9/11/00, Terry McClary stated the only
correspondence he has received from MAM was a letter asking to verify that
his kit had the proper thickness main spars with it as they thought they
shipped some out that were too thin! Someone may have grabbed Canadian
Advanced Ultralight Spars from the shelf, in place of proper .063 spars.
It's all a mystery to me.

Bob P., can you shine any light on this situation OR Grant M. are you still
tuned in to clear this up AS A MATTER OF SAFETY (Or peace of mind)!!!!

Wayne G. O'Shea

Rebel UL main spar

Sorry, I don't have the answer, Wayne,

I always thought that ALL the Rebel spars were the same, but
the AULA's didn't have the extra ribs & doublers .... (What do <I>
know ??!! :-) )

I <do> know that FINR, Rebel #001, - has the light struts - no
idea what spars - and was flight & load tested to 1,450 lb., in the course
of getting the Rebel approved for Europe originally. Since the tests
are on file, presumably it would be no problem to increase IT to 1,450 lb. !
It does weigh 716 lb. empty, with all that upholstery & paint ...
(And I'd REALLY like to find a good home for it - I need money to buy
a paint job and new amphibs for XWI !! :-) )

Unless someone were absolutely determined to stay ultralight,
I think everyone <ought> to build the amateur-built version, good for
1,650 gross, and choose their engine and extras later. That way, they
never have to worry, and can go to a larger engine later, if they
change their minds. I suspect the weight penalty is not enough to
preclude staying WELL within the U/L limits ....

There are SO many advantages to building an Amateur-Built
Rebel as opposed to a U/L one, in Canada, that there really IS only
one choice ! (MHO only .... )
