Shell now sells an aviation oil specifically for the 912, and allows 100LL
use.

Builders,
Can you use 100LL avgas continuously in the Rotax 912 without fear of
the heavy lead content having any detrimental effects on the engine? Would
a product like FAA approved "Avblend" oil additive help keep the lead from
sticking to the valve stems, tops of pistons, etc?

Subject: [rebel-builders] Rebel for Sale

Hi all, as some of you know I have been thinking about selling my Rebel due
to personal time and money pressures. I have procrastinated because I really
did not want to give her up but the time has come as they say..

Rebel #652 was built by Bob Johnson and finished in 2002. She now has around
260 hours TTSN ( the docs are at Purple Hill and I have a 60 year old brain
that I cannot trust so that is why the approximate number).

Any of you who know Bob know that he is an excellent builder and #652 is no
exception. I am currently having an annual done by John Goris at Purple Hill
Aviation and he has declared C-GIWH to be a solid and tight rebel.

The engine is an 0-320 H2AD with the T mod and a simple manual pre oiler
system ( thanks Bob). Compression check done yesterday (July 3rd 2008) was
75/75/75/72.

So as not to take up too much space on this list I have published a small
website with pictures and details of pricing ,equipment and my contact info.
There is even a video of a float take off - you may want to have a look even
if you are not interested in the plane!

thanks

[rebel-builders] prolonged 100LL use in the 912

Hi Cris !

It would be better to run Shell Gold auto gas if & when possible...
We ran 100LL for 50 hours at a time, on trips - it would take a couple
of tanks of Shell Gold to clean the plugs up afterward. It got harder
to start ... and the oil must be changed more often - maybe 15 - 20 hr.
It's best NOT to use a synthetic oil with 100LL - it doesn't hold the
lead in suspension - semi-synthetic does though ...

On last year's Ramble, the 912 pilots all were able to get mogas
at every stop - running into town - so you CAN fly across the country
on mogas, if you are determined !

I would NOT use Avblend AT ALL in the 912 until it has at least
200 - 300 hours on it. They take about 600 hours to 'break-in' !!
And a good grade motorcycle oil will help the break-in - we ran
Castrol GTX 50 weight for the first couple of hundred hours - today
maybe a good semi-synthetic would be a good choice ....
It's GREAT news that Shell now supply an oil specifically for
the 912 ! Looks like the 912 will become THE aircraft engine
of the future !! :-)

Avblend IS great stuff for Lycomings - I add a can almost EVERY
oil change. It helps protect the camshaft ...

Of course, all of the above is just my experience/opinion - if you
want to keep your Rotax warranty, you should do what THEY suggest !

I don't pretend to know anything about rotax engines but I would use tcp
or decalin lead scavenger in the fuel of any engine that runs on leaded
gas after the first couple of hours since new. That will reduce the
abrasive accumulation on valve stems etc. and should reduce plug
fouling. Some folks recommend doubling the amount on the label for
engines that are particularly sensitive to lead.

Hello

I do remember conversation with the "Pelican" engineer that the only way to
avoid fouling plug problem with their "Tudor" (certified version project of
the Pelican) was to use TCP in the 100LL.
