materials that vary in stiffness is a good idea for a spring. It might
cause a lot of internal stresses. Impact resistance hasn't been an issue
with my plane and I think there's lots of parts on the tail more fragile
than the spring. If I were to buid a tailspring i'd use lots of layers of
glass in epoxy. I'd make it wider than needed and vacuum bag it to get
complete saturation without extra epoxy. After it was cured I'd cut it to
the final width. Truthfully though my plane has an 0-320 and a not cut back
firewall a little extra weight at the back isn't going to hurt so if I
needed a new tailspring I'd just use a steel trailer spring 3 leaves.

I guess you could use the dimensions of the spring already in use to figure
out how thick to make it. If you really wanted to experiment you might
alternate different layers of S-glass with Kevlar, leaving the outside
layers in Kevlar for it's impact resistance. I would lean toward a higher
percentage of S-glass. But with Kevlar being twice as strong as S-glass you
could make a smaller, lighter tailspring with equal strength if you wanted.
Or make one with the same dimensions and it will be stronger, lighter, and
privide impact resistance to those rocks you're going to through at it. Use
epoxy resin. You shouldn't use polyester resins with Kevlar.

could lay up double or triple width & saw them apart ...
