[rebel-builders] RE: Making your own fiberglass tailspring

Hi Rob I haven't flown with the aluminum spring but I believe the concensus
is that it is a bar and not a spring. Apperaently it can be fixed by
grinding a taper to thin it out a bit. Lots of info in the archives. I have
the fiberglass spring and it is a solid lay up exactly the same shape as
your aluminum spring. There aren't any hard points just use the large wood
washers to spread the loads.

Not having ever seen the fiberglass counterpart, can someone tell me
whether this was a solid part, or hollow and formed around a mandrel or
something?
I'm also wondering about the wheel- and fuselage-attach areas and the
reinforcement required when you put bolts through it. Were there any hard-
points imbedded in the lay-ups?

IMO, making a tailspring out of fiberglass is ...I'll just say it, no
offense intended ...a waste of time.

A large amount of work for a big guess as to how it will come out.
Comparatively, heat treated Chromoly steel or spring 7075 aluminum rod
(tapered in a lathe maybe) is cheap material, hardly any fabrication time,
and one can jump up and down on something similar to get a close guess if
it's in the neighborhood. Lastly, if kept from corrosion it will never do
bad things such as delaminate or change elasticity with temperature.

This is not to knock the idea of glass main-gear on the Eze's. There, they
were after a very complex shape and much bigger part. For a simple small
tail spring tho, the time is much better spent with with something very
close to 'off-the-shelf'.

My kit came with the fiberglass tailspring - I'm flying a kitfox with a
solid aluminum - because I didn't know any better I thought the aluminum was
better so I ordered one from MAM in January. Now I both aluminum and
fiberglass, neither one is installed. I sure wish I had known you are
interested in the fiberglass as I'd like to sell it now that the $170
aluminum has arrived.
