Hi all
I am planing on use a 6 cylinder Jabiru engine in my rebel mostly due to cost
and weight. I am looking for any fed back, good or bad, on this from the
group.
How slow will it cruise using about 100 HP in cruise?
If I keep it light can I still operate on skis?
Will the shorter take off distance ( lower weight ) make up for the Initial
climb rate?
Thanks Jim LePard ,, rebel 254

Jim, my personal Rebel flew for 4 + years with a O-235-C 100 H.P. Had the
best climb rate of anything I had flown previously and weighed 958 pounds
empty. Cruise about 90 M.P.H. I fly it on scatch built fixed wheel
penetration skis, about the size of 4000's (21" wide x 6 feet long) so I can
fly in 3 feet deep powder snow. Didn't even have have plastic bottoms on
them until last year. Worked great with the 100 H.P. until I got stuck one
day and swore if I had a 150 H.P I wouldn't have got stuck! Was a good
excuse to change the engine, all I really needed was plastic on the skis!!!!

Hi Jim,

I met you a few months ago when I came to see your plane and was
contemplating purchasing a partially built Rebel, which I subsequently
bought, kit #357. I have a good friend, Jay Cook, who has an 80 HP Jab in his
Kitfox. He had some interesting experiences with his engine (not all bad).
Thought you might want to talk with him...he loves to talk and build planes.
Here is his email... herrcook@uswest.net.

Dear folk,

I have been the Jabiru agent here in New Zealand since purchasing NZ's first Jabiru over four years ago. The reason for my writing to you is a result of what for me has been an absolute disaster. That is the bad publicity that seems mainly to have come from the poor back up and Builders Web Group language of the present US dealer.

I have decided to take a small risk of confidientiality and let you know what I am up to. A fact is that Jabiru Pty Ltd do have contractual arrangements which it appears there are at least another 18 months before which they cannot escape. And presently Jabiru 3300 cc Engines are $13,430 US and the 2200 cc 80 hp are $9,300 in the USA. Now at present there is a bad situation with the Australasian currencies and the US distributor is creaming it.

Phil Ainsworth (Jabiru co-manager) and I are very good friends so I have decided to act on my own therefore read below and I would love to receive your comments. I am also working on the facilitation of warranties over there, but in the mean time Engines sold are fully covered by Jabiru Pty Ltd through me as their agent and underwritten by me.

Jabiru 3300 cc Engines ex factory $17,000 Aud = $9442 US today
Emery Airfeight to All US destinations = 310
Insurance @ 1% (recommended) say . 100
Total $9,852 US
(allow $400 US as it was in fact plus $200 ten days ago)

Jabiru 2200 cc Engines ex factory $11,500 Aud = $6388 US today
Emery Airfreight to All US destinations is about 285
Insurance @ 1% (recommended) . 70
$6743 US

Product is best paid for by direct Bank Transfer to Jabiru (Visa costs) and freight charged for fwd collection by receiver as there is a policy problem with Emery in Australia not being able to charge me in New Zealand. The last Engine to Detroit was another $30 US at collection.

I sincerely hope you will come back with your coments

Kindest regards

Ashley Johnston

Jim,
You should have no problem at all with this combo. The Rebel
cruises about 95-98 mph with the 912 at 80 hp. - you won't likely be
much faster, but should have great takeoff & climb performance on
skis, in the cool air !

One comment - I'm not sure exactly how much power you will
get from the 6 cyl. Jabiru. Folks here have flown the Zenair 601's
in identical configurations, with the Jabiru 80 hp., and the Rotax
912 80 hp. - it seems the horses are a bit smaller down under ! :-`)
(Shetland ponies, perhaps ;-) )

The 912 powered 601's consistently out climb and out cruise
the Jabiru, no matter what tweaks are done on the props, and there
are cooling problems with the Jabiru installation on hot days....

These are not big problems, just an indication that perhaps
you might not get 120 hp. from the 6 cyl. , and might have to do some
extra work with baffling. No big deal ... as I said, the Rebel
will still give you great performance, even with 100 hp. !!

It certainly sounds like you'd get a MUCH better deal ordering
your engine from NZ, if you haven't already got it !!!

Thank you for passing this on, Alister !

Please thank Ashley for coming forward - I'm sure there is much
he can do to salvage the market here. There is considerable interest in
the Jabiru engines, and better pricing will surely help get more of them
out into the field, where its performance and reliability history will
be seen and judged - hopefully leading to much wider acceptance !

Another thing that would REALLY help acceptance is the
availability of engine mounts and packages for the popular kit aircraft ...

Thanks !

PS There was no direct email address for Ashley in your email -
so no way to reply directly. This would be very useful for
folks who might like to order !!

Jim if I remember right the Jab makes it's power at 3300rpm which means you
might have to go to a smaller prop diameter. thats why its not quite as
efficient as a rotax or lycosaur. I think you'll be happy with whatever
engine you choose.
Good luck Drew Dalgleish
