Hello Clay:

Was following your post of June 4, 2008 below. Haven't seen any response to the group so far. Have you received any answers to your question privately? If so, would you care to share the information privately?

Then again, maybe I missed something as I have been having email problems lately.

Good luck on the float project!

Regards,
Terry Dazey

Hey Guys,
My floats are just about done and I'm working now on the spreader bars and attach struts. I was told by another builder that the strut lengths given in the manual which is 37 1/2 for rear and 39 1/2 for front are wrong ... Anybody else notice this?
Thanks for any help.

Clay

[rebel-builders] Amphib float strut lenghts

I installed my floats as per the manual and I think they work just fine. If
you search the archives there has been lots of discussion about the
benefits of different throat angles and strut lengths. If I remember
correctly the greater the throat angle is the faster you'll get off the
water and the slower you'll be in cruise. Some builders think that the
plane sits too high and shortened the struts which then means the spreader
bars need to be shortened as well to keep the proper angle on the struts.

[rebel-builders] Amphib float strut lenghts

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:43 pm

Terry, I just got back from a road trip and was able to send you the info I
gathered. Sorry for the delay.
Looks like others have piped in too with some good info. It's good to know
that the MAM lengths work fine.
I'm going to cut my front struts at 38 1/2 (to give me a little shorter
than 37" rear strut because of a small mistake I made cutting), attach to
the airplane and then cut the rears for an angle of 3 degrees as Keith
Kendon has suggested. I may have to adjust from there ... but I hope not !
Are you about ready to install?

[rebel-builders] Amphib float strut lenghts

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:43 pm

Hi Terry,
I did speak with MAM (Jeff) about this and he wasn't sure but did remember
some extra testing done on an Elite amphib install done some years before.
Jeff sent me a copy of this document which suggest that the rear strut would
likely have to be shortened from the original MAM suggested length of 37 1/4
to increase the angle (nose higher, measured under the wing) relative to the
float deck. Apparently MAM's original set-up is for 2 degrees but should be
greater for better performance ... but still no actual strut length was
given.
I then spoke with Abe in BC. He had built a number of floats at the factory
for MAM and was a good source ... Abe wasn't aware of any problem with the
MAM strut length but admit that he didn't have much to do with the
installation of the floats on the airplane. Abe did check around some more
and got some good info from Keith Kinden of Montana Float Co who has
installed many 1800s on Rebels. Keith suggests to keep the front struts the
same (39 1/2) and install the float / fuse fittings top and bottom. Cut the
rear struts to MAMs suggested (37 1/4) but only install the bottom float
attach fittings leaving the top undrilled until the airplane is lifted in
with the front struts attached. Adjust the angle of the plane until you get
3 to 4 degrees and then cut the top of the rear struts and drill.
This make good sense to me.
I'll forward the info Jeff sent me for those who are interested.

Clay

[rebel-builders] Amphib float strut lenghts

Post by Terry Dazey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:43 pm

Hello Clay and All Responders:

Thank you guys for the amphib strut information. Am quite far from completing the Rebel, but wanted to keep my amphib float manual up-to-date with all ideas, suggestions, thoughts etc. If subject information is relevant, as this is, I will typically print it out and insert it in the 3-ring binder for future reference.

Good idea to post the information on the dcsol if possible. http://www.dcsol.com/murphy-rebel/

Thanks for the information!

Good luck on the project and keep us posted on your project.
