Reinforce Rebel spring gear?

Hi Charles,

The SR has a massive machined fitting at the top of the gear leg,
fastening it to the webs of 2 spars that cross the fuse. I just can't
imagine any way that this could be adapted to a Rebel, but Brian's
a VERY experienced builder, and perhaps had some other idea in mind ...
The Cessna gear box is an ongoing source of expense to Cessna drivers
- it ain't as good as it appears to be !! (Ask a C-180 owner !!)

There shouldn't be much difference in the gear stance ...

The spring gear and the countersunk leading edge are both
cosmetic (<IMHO>) - and therefore, it's your choice !!! I REALLY
do suspect that performance would suffer with a countersunk leading
edge ( based on one lonely example ...), and <my> personal preference
is the original gear. BUT - there are hundreds of Rebels flying
around with spring gear who haven't had any problems ....

Hi Bob...thanks for the response. I'm sure no authority on this
stuff...just repeating what I heard.

I had contacted Brian at MAM to discuss the correct choice of landing gear.
He recommended the spring gear over the bungee and said that it would
suffice, unless used in a very rough environment. He mentioned the heavier
reinforcement used on the SR fuse. as a way to "beef up" the spring gear
attachement area that some have implied can distort. I just wanted to get
some responses on this, as I have no direct knowledge about it at all. I
still like the looks of the spring gear, and it's supposed to have a wider
stance than the standard gear. I would be happier if the gear leg was
mounted in a torque box (Cessna like). I was building an ARV Griffin (till
they quit shipping)...that aircraft had a sturdy torque box to transfer
bending moments from gear to fuse. Does SR use something like this in the
double floor?

Brian also mentioned using the Elite .032 leading edge on the Rebel. The
Griffin(wings) I mentioned were entirely flush riveted with Avex's....so I
was interested in using my dimpling/countersink equipment. On the Rebel
wing, however, it sounds like the flush riveting would be mainly aesthetic.

I'll think about what you all said on these issues. Thanks for everyone's
responses. A prospective buyer does seem to get a bit different slant on
them from MAM...than that which is discussed on this list. Later, Charles
