[rebel-builders] Alaska Fly In

Post by Mike Davis » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:42 pm

Wish I'd known you were going to be there Craig, 3 of us flew our planes
down from Fairbanks. Don't know if you went on the Poker Run, but it was
absolutely beautiful! They had 44 airplanes land on the beach this year.

We just got back from Valdez for the annual fly-in. Lots of cool
planes..no
rebels (yet).

The best part was the STOL competition. There were several experimental
planes incl cubs that were fun to watch. Their basically stripped down
"hot-rods". They put 300 lbs in the planes and then they compete. The
shortest take-off was 47' and I don't think that was as good as last year!
They hold the brakes and then release under full power. When the tail's
up
they slam it down on the asphalt and that gives the front wheels a little
lift and they just take off! Fun! Wonder what a 180 hp carbon fiber cub
flies like?

Bummmer.... we were at the P run in spirit. I WILL fly to this event one
day and I'd like to compete...just to have done it. We are still planning
on making it up there sometime. Let me know if you ever are in our neck of
the woods.CW
