[rebel-builders] VOR antenna orientation

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:42 pm

No technical advantage from a radiation point of view Ted. Usually
easier on the mounting points to have the elements trailing but no big
deal either way.

other?

Thank you,

Ted,
The only reason they go forward is if you can't get clearence for the rudder to get its full deflection.
On our Moose they go to the rear.

I mounted my Comant VOR antenna forward on the tail fin in the area where
the fiberglass tip is located. I did this for two reasons:

1) The Comant installation instructions recommend this direction
2) It was the only direction that worked due to the wide rudder and fin

There are other antennas that start out perpendicular to the fin and then
angle out. These might work with the wide Murphy rudder. Many like pointing
backwards for aesthetics. I've also heard that iced up forward mounted
antennas tend to snap off. Staying out of ice would solve this issue. Comant
says that rear mounting is okay, but better signal is received mounting
forward.
