[rebel-builders] Moose: putting on controls / wings

Post by Jim Cole » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:38 pm

Sounds like fun Ted, I rented a drywall jack or stand to lift my wings into
place - it worked really well so I didn't have to worry about hurrying while
someone held the wings up.

Cheers

[rebel-builders] Moose: putting on controls / wings

I've done the horizontal stab and elevator a few times by myself but I would
highly recommend two people. Three would be even better since you will want
to be extra careful with the new paint job. Elevator goes through the slot
first, pushed as far back as it will go. Then slip the elevator in. You
have to hold your tongue just right, wiggling and adjusting.

If the access holes to get to the bolts holding the elevator to the
horizontal stab are still cut the way mine were from MAM you will want to
make them bigger. You'll never get the bolts in place through the original
access.

Of course I meant "then slip the horizontal stab in" after the elevator is
through the slot hanging loose (hopefully held by your two friends). I
think I remember it was easiest when the elevator was drooped down with the
leading edge sticking up, in fact, held up against the top of the slot. On
the side of the airplane that you are standing, holding the elevator to put
through the slot, the elevator has to be angled down a bit to get the stab
past it. You might think about putting some duct tape or something all
around the slot to help protect your paint when (not if) you accidentally
bang the elevator or stab on the edges of the slot.
