Besides lowering my stall speed by about 10 mph, the VGs also provide a lot
more lift at the float take-off angle. That was a little unexpected
actually, as I previously thought they only lowered stall speed by
sustaining a higher angle of attack before breaking into the stall. But as
we know, more lift at lower speed also creates more drag which then requires
more power.
So I found that after installing the VGs, my lift without flaps was about
the same as before the VGs and with full flaps. The good news is that when I
did apply flaps after gaining speed on the step, I had more lift with the
VGs than before without them, and it jumped off the water pretty quickly
then. In fact with the VGs, I could take off pretty fast without any flaps
at all on the water, where before I needed flaps, especially if heavily
loaded.
So now, with the extra power, and all that lift, it should get off pretty
fast, I think.
On land, it was still faster taking off with full flaps (and VGs) right from
the start of the roll. I guess not having the extra drag of the water is the
difference. However, I did notice a few times when heavily loaded on land
(and hot out), I would still lift off pretty fast, but I had to do a much
longer run in ground effect before it would reach a safe climb speed. I
really noticed the drag in those situations.
I wonder if you guys with the Angus cuffs also experienced similar results.
Walter
