[rebel-builders] Wing Flipping

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:31 pm

I didn't do anything fancy. I just put two eyebolts into crossmembers in
the ceiling of the garage directly above both ends of my worktable. I put
eyebolts into each end of the worktable. Then I attached ropes to the wing
at the wing attach and flap bracket on the inboard end and the aileron
bracket and if I remember right, just looped through the ribs at the front
spar on the outboard end. I passed the ropes up through the ceiling
eyebolts and then down to the eyebolts in the end of the table. Work nice
and slow and you can flip the wing easily by yourself. I think I remember a
little bending of the outboard ribs that was minor and easily bent back.
There's not much weight on the outboard end so the ribs just get a little
crease where the rope hits. Almost too little to notice unless you are
passing a rope through that area. I don't remember exactly how I had the
ropes arranged but that's pretty close. Just take your time, think it
through and you'll flip the wings with no problem, no big expense, and
nothing complicated.

Anyone come up with a good way to do solo wing flipping? My neighbors
aren't close by and I don't want to ruin my voluntary pool of help! I did
see one thing on it somewhere but I don't think it was on this site.
Obviously, a pulley in the ceiling will work but attachment point, flex, etc
are concerns. Craig

[rebel-builders] Wing Flipping

P.S. This was with one skin clecoed in place. Flipping the spar/rib
structure without skins would be more problematic with only one person. I
don't actually remember if there is a need to flip the spar/rib assembly
without skins. Seems like you wouldn't have to.

Funny. I actually have a picture of myself on the table with the wing
suspended above me. I had both skins clecoed in place with more spacing
than I like for final riveting and I needed to borrow clecoes from one side
to use on the other for riveting. So I was upside down strategically
pulling clecoes from the bottom to use on the top.
