[rebel-builders] Rebel seats

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:31 pm

Hi Ben !

The seat frames are very nice. You might want to talk to an upholstery
shop about sewing a heavy canvas sling around the tubes for the back
and bottom, instead of rivetting on those aluminum sheets.....

Drilling all those holes will weaken the frames, and the canvas slings
will fit your bottom much better than the rigid aluminum. You will
want seat cushions at least 6" to 8" thick - ideally with temperfoam
for the top 3" or so. The idea is to use firm foam for the base,
medium in the middle, and 1 or 2" of soft on top, for comfort.
Triangles of foam at the sides of the back & bottom make nice bolsters,
for a bucket seat comfort fit...

I've seen too many Rebels with 1" thick seats - you can't see out
properly, and they get verrrry hard very quickly !! :-(

The Moose also benefits from extra thick seat bases...

Ben,

I second Bob's suggestion to use slings instead of the sheet aluminum
riveted to the frames. I had Oregon Aero build my seat upholstery from the
frames on up, starting with heavy canvas slings, then their multi-layered
multi-density foam under the fabric. They turned out very nice, and are
certainly stronger overall.

Hello Bob

Hum... Seats already riveted! I know there are some deals sometimes at
Sun'Fun on temper foam... If someone can drive them back...! How much
most of you have paid for nice/average job from local shop? I know Oregon
but their prices are high!

Hi Jean !

Dunno about just seats - could be anything from about $200 -
$600, depending on whether you supply the fabric & foam ...
I would use Naugahyde for the sides, for better wear, and cloth
for the centers, for coolness ...

I do know of a few guys who have had complete interiors
done for about $1,500 - that is, seats, with pockets on the back,
door panels, with pockets, rear fuselage 'curtain' to close off the
rear of the baggage area, ...and strips along the top bulkhead
over the doors, to make small storage compartments there
for glasses, etc.
... all in Naugahyde & cloth, in matching colours, and a couple
also got cloth headliners & lightweight carpet included.

There's a guy in the Toronto area - think he's called
"The Travelling Tailor" .... who drives a special van to your site,
and does the sewing right there ! I think he is booked
several months in advance, so has to be called EARLY !!!!
Don't know if he'd drive to Quebec, though .... ;-)
Most any upholstery shop should do .... try the boat or RV
places ..

Don Chisholm (chizmsupholstery@rogers.com) is the name of the travelling
upholsterer. And you are right Bob, he is a busy fellow and anyone should
plan ahead for timing. Pierre and I where arranging him for the Moose
interior before it went West. He will send you samples of fabric and colours
to decide on ahead of time. Bob J

Post by bransom » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:31 pm

My preferences will be to just get the seats for starters -- and if it gets
complicated I'll sit on nearly anything for the first 25-40 hours. I
figure I'll have plenty of time after first flight to get the interior up
to par (or hopefully even 3- or 4 star). Thanks for the reminder on the
slings Bob. I've got a little experience with sail repair and catamaran
trampolines, so putting slings on sounds easy enough. I suppose nylon mesh
is not a good idea though in terms of what it does in the event of fire.
On the other hand, if that part is hot enf to burn, I suppose my luck is
already run out. :)

Ralph,

FWIW - That's about what it cost me (USD) three years ago to have Oregon
Aero build complete seats on my completed frames up using sling foundations
(no riveted seat skins), multi-layer foams, fabric, seat back pockets, etc.
I chose a fabric from their swatches, told them my priorities were safety,
then comfort, then aesthetics... and left the rest to them. I'm not quite
flying with them yet, but I am sitting on them frequently now. :-) They're
_very_ nice seats.

OA is certainly one of the premium seat builders. I don't know what their
current pricing might be, but you might check with them at least for
comparison purposes. Email me direct if you'd like more info.

Would appreciate any help or advice. Thanks
