[rebel-builders] Fuel tank sealer

Charlie,
I'm using it right now on my wing spars and it works great. It's just
like all other pro-seal - really messy. Take care to plan your work so
you don't end up gooping it all over the place. Also make sure that you
prime only the areas the instructions call out. Also wear gloves and
clothes you never want to see again. Just a few words of hard won wisdom.

I wonder if any of the Rebel builders have used Van's fuel tank sealer kit
MC-236-B2. It is listed in Van's 2008 catalog as a quart kit with
accelerator for $39.30. Wicks and ACS list a pint kit of Proseal for $58.28

John,
I mixed it by eye-ball (the ratio is 100:10) and it worked well. I was
told the eye-ball method by a couple of friends of mine one building a
F-1 Rocket and the other a RV-7. If you want to measure it you'd need
something like a triple beam balance, $65 USD on e-bay. Another
recommendation is to pro-seal the area, cleco it together and then
forget about it for 4 days, then do your riveting. Check out this post
on Van Forum:

Good Luck and keep clean,

John, what did you use to measure it with? As it says to mix 100:1 by
weight, and at this stage I am just up to sealing the spar caps,
won't need to mix a huge amount.
Any thought,suggestions appreciated.

Hello John

Good to hear from you. Sounds like you finally got your replacement wing
kit. I am starting to Proseal my second wing and I thought I would try Van's
cheaper sealant kit. On the first wing I used a Proseal kit from Wicks. I
mixed it from a scale I had left over from my Glastar. I believe the mix
ratio is 10 to 100 by weight. The scale I used was a 500 gram scale made by
Pelouze Scale Co. 7400W. 100th Place Bridgeview, IL. 60455. I usually mixed
50 to 100 gram batches so it was easy to measure 5-10 grams of accelerator.
If you want I will try and contact the scale company and get back with you.
Good luck

Charlie E.

Use a food scale (electronic) cost about $40.00. Mix ratio is 100:10 or
10:1 (keeping things simple), having consistency to mixing your sealant is
advisable; since everyone sees different shades of grey (one persons
perception of being mixed right may differ from that of someone else).

Using "Proseal" is messy at the best of times, why would you want to
possible do it again, or better yet end up with a leaky wing because your
sealant didn't set properly.

Make the small investment into a scale, otherwise the instructions on the
can should say "Just eyeball it to a nice grey color".

Just my 2 cents from someone who doesn't like working with proseal.

I got my proseal (type A & type B) from these folks in Kansas. Great
(outstanding!) service and excellent prices:
http://www.sealpakcoinc.com/welcome.htm

Also, when mixing, what I do is to use the top off of a coffee can or
cottage cheese container. I write the date and what I'm using the proseal
on (e.g. wings, doubler, this or that) on the top. Then I mix it and apply
it. Now I have a stack of umpteen tops with dates over the past couple of
years. I can refer to any batch on any part and see how hard it is now and
see what date I mixed it.

Moreover, I've always just eye-balled the mix. No fancy scales or tubes or
whatever. To date, excellent, solid results.

The proseal rep that I talked to said that final properties would be
proportional to accuracy of the mix. Obviously he is trying to maintain
the certified properties so I don't know what is "good enough". He also
recommended stirring the hardener before measuring as it could settle
out a bit and affect things.

For what it's worth, I asked Proseal's teck rep if they had tested Proseal
(PS-890-B2) with blended auto fuel (ethanol). They said they had no official
test results but he new of a few company's who have used it successfully for
about 8-10 years. I asked if that was also true of their sloshing compound
(PS-1005-L). He said the sloshing compound was compatible with Proseal but
was chemically different, and had no experience with exposure to ethanol.

Maybe some of our Rebel builders have had experience with Proseal/ethanol?

Ditto...just eyeballed it. Sealed my tanks four years
ago, still not flying yet, but tanks are sealed tight.

I also would typically mix up an entire quart kit of
the stuff I bought in the UK as the quart kits i
bought had the required "part B" already measured in a
small tube. This method requires a weekend worksession
to use it all up in one go.

I'm making a list of all you guys that are "eye balling" a 10 to 1 mix for
later on when you've fill the tanks a few times. I've done over 2 dozen wing
tanks and have gone thru countless cans of the stuff and there is no way you
can eyeball volume.. let alone weight. Either buy a $20 or $30 digital scale
or raid some drug lab for one... but for god sakes, for all the pain and
suffering doing it once, let alone twice or three times, either weigh the
stuff or measure it at what ever that ratio is... I believe it's 8 .? to 1
by volume... and as Ken or Drew pointed out, be sure to stir the catalyst
before using it....every time.

Hello

I bought a $40.00 digital balance (office depot, mail purpose). It was perfect! After use you can sell it on ebay to the
drugs dealer! lol... It calculate the tare weight of the empty yogourt pot... Don't forget to put a saran wrap over it
before use if not you will know how sticky is the proseal....
