[rebel-builders] Oil cooler...

Hi Jean: I would definitely say yes to the oil cooler. As you have probably
read on this site there has been many problems regarding inadequate cooling
in general if exit cowling openings are not big enough and the lack of an
oil cooler would only compound the problem. The worst case I have seen is
the so called speed cowl. The way it comes from the factory will not work.
It must be drastically altered at the bottom exit area. The four door
aluminum cowl set up is far superior in MHO. I kind of got off topic a bit
but again yes to the oil cooler. Bob J

On my Rebel, I will put a used 0--235C1 that Ialready own. It is fit with
a oil screen, but I expect to by a adaptor to fit a oil filter. Should I
install a oil cooler? I will make my owned cowling base on
Wayne/Bob P. style.

[rebel-builders] Oil cooler...

I have a Rebel with an O-235 L2C engine that has one of Van's RV oil coolers on it. The only problem I have is keeping my oil temp. up. I typically run with 2/3 of the cooler blocked off in the middle of summer and completely blocked in the winter. I struggle to see 180 degrees F even with the cooler blocked as I stated before. I plan to install a hinged door and cable on the cooler inlet someday (don't you love experimental aircraft) so I can control the temperature manually no matter what the OAT is.
Safe flying,

Scott

I installed a Remote Oil thermostat that fits in your oil lines between your
engine and the oil cooler. see
http://www.perma-cool.com/Catalog/Contents.htm

So far it's worked great - the oil heats up pretty quickly and then stays at
least 180 to 190 degrees. Some of the problems that Rotax encountered over
the years was oil temp remaining too low - especially with school aircraft
so that over time moisture built up and wasn't removed by temperature. I
don't worry about it now - my temps are very consistent even for short
flights and I had the oil cooler for those hot days that we encountered
while doing the ramble to the west coast.

Cheers

Jean,

I would give it a try on a warm day. You can always add a cooler if needed. If you don't need it, it's just extra weight and stuff in the way under the cowling. I have dynafocal mounts and I use a spin on oil filter (Champion).
