[rebel-builders] Rebel - Float Troubles & fixes

Hi Craig !

Yes ! This is one of the Ontario Mods - we replace FUS-26
with a copy, made of .040 (orig. is .020), or some folks just
add another FUS-26, and lots of epoxy primer....

It's also a good idea to add a couple of pieces of stringer,
or channels (ST-28), vertically on the inside of FUS-26.

As for the corner wraps - it is best to replace ALL of the
FUS-10's (.020) with FUS-70's (.025) to avoid grief later ...

The most important Ontario Mod is to double the FUS-30,
almost all the way forward - you can do this while building,
or you will do it within a year or so .....

It's a good idea to add a channel doubler inside the
bulkhead that holds the float fittings - effectively doubling
the bulkhead, all the way up to past the curved section...
The Elite has some extra pieces in there ...

I think that other Rebel with the rounded rudder cap
originally came from Texas ... it had a LOT of mods,
so a buyer should check things out carefully. The holes
at the front may not have anything to do with the floats -
that picture shows a Rebel that had spring gear... The
float mounts are quite different from the regular Rebel.
It isn't toooo unusual for builders to add large triangular
doublers on the outside - but much larger than the
ones in the picture .... those wouldn't help much !

Drew,

I'm not interested in buying it. I'm on this wild roller coaster ride
called building! I just was wondering about the damage where the floats
attach. I have looked at many rebel photos at airliners.net and it seems
like there are many with crinkled sheet metal in the area below the doors.
Is that a common weak area?

I just uploaded two photos in the rebel float section of the files. This
is
a rebel on amphibs that's currently for sale here in Alaska. One photo
is obvious damage above the attach point and the builder's or someone's
fix (all four attach points are like this). Is this the corner wrap
flex/damage
I've been reading about in our forum? What do you think was or wasn't
done during the build?

The other photo is of the tail section; the fin and rudder are obviously
not
of rebel descent although I can't tell what it might have come from. The
owner flew it up from Fl last summer and left it on consignment. He was
asking 77,000 but now it's down to 72,000, I think. It looks a little
rough
and I'm pretty sure both tanks are leaking.
Hi craig It looks like he might have had a very hard landing normally the
rear attach points punch in right at the corner not up the side like that.
I'd be really concerned if the front attach points show damage because
that's also the main carry through for the wings. It looks to me like the
fin and rudder are rebel parts but he made a different rudder tip. What
does seem weird in the tail picture is that the elevators aren't even with
the tips and they don't come back as far as the rudder. Maybe he shortened
the cord on the stabilizer because from the picture angle it looks like
the stabilizer struts are swept forward instead of being straight. I also
see that he split the flaps and ailerons which is generally felt to be an
undesirable mod. It's probably repairable for not a huge investment in
parts but the value of the plane really depends on te condition of the
engine and what avionics are installed. If you could put up a couple more
pictures of the tail from different angles and close ups of the front and
rear attach points it would help.
