[rebel-builders] Rebel instruction?

(In the US) I haven't looked at the FARs in a while but I'm pretty sure
instruction can be given in a Rebel with no "excemption" to a rule. You
just have to find an instructor that will do it for free. You can't perform
commercial operations in an experimental, but flight instruction is OK if
you don't pay the instructor.

Getting Rebel instruction would require an exemption for the training
plane, right? (in the US). I wonder if anyone has ever considered getting
that exemption and providing 'transition' training in a Rebel? I know
other planes are close enf in practice, but getting some dual time and a
tailwheel endorsement in a Rebel would sure be fun while still in the
riveting stage.

You can even do it in your own Rebel during phase one flight testing, the
first 25-40 hours when you're not allowed to carry a passenger. But as Mike
said, first you have to find that free instructor!

[quote]Not only did you put me on the spot Ted, but both Mike K and I were wrong!
I hate when that happens.

First, in the US you cannot receive flight instruction during Phase I
testing...

The carrying of passengers will not be permitted while the aircraft is
restricted to the flight test area. It is suggested that a tape recorder,
for example, be used by the pilot for recording readings, etc. Flight
instruction will not be allowed in the aircraft while in the flight test
area.
That is taken from AC 20-27d (now how about the arguement that an AC is
not a regulation, and is therefore not enforcable?). I knew about the
restriction on passengers, but thought there was an exemption for
receiving instruction.

As for getting instruction once the aircraft has completed Phase I... you
can pay the instructor, you just can't pay for the airplane!

From FAR 91.319...

(e) No person may operate an aircraft that is issued an experimental
certificate under

Actually, after the initial fly off (testing) phase, you can get flight
instruction in not only your own experimental, but also anyone else's,
so long as the owner isn't paid for the use of the aircraft, unless the
owner has received a special exemption from the FAA. If the owner wants
to be paid for the use of his airplane for instruction, he can apply to
the local FAA FSDO for a special exemption allowing the airplane to be
"hired" for purposes of instruction.

These points are covered in plain English in a recent FAA FSDO
newsletter. See p. 3 of <http://tinyurl.com/24pv9x/>

Of course, as is often the case, the real limiting factor is not in the
regs, but insurance. The third party owner who is willing to allow his
plane to be used by an instructor and student for type transition
training may find his carrier won't cover that activity.
