Bob, you mentioned military surplus 914s. Do you know if these really
have
come out available yet and any info on what the cost and rebuild would be
like?

I forgot to mention, I heard from an air force guy that these engines are
in the US Predator. I guess that's probably old news, but it struck me as
'oh yea, of course that's a match'! I can hardly imagine how many 914
engines are cranked out for this.

[rebel-builders] military surplus Rotax?

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:26 pm

Hi Ben !

They (914's) have been available for a few years - show up on E-Bay
from time to time .... I recall prices from about $6,000 - $14,000,
for supposedly 'overhauled' engines --- all with over 10,000 hours
on them ! (....out of Predators, or other UAV's - some are rumoured
to have been tweaked up to over 200 hp. !!)

Regular 912's also turn up regularly, removed from Diamond
Katana trainers .... usually have been overheated, because of
Diamond's cowling being too tight .... or somebody using
regular aircraft oil... All are rebuildable, but costs might
run to $10K+ ...

There are also some good used and overhauled 912's
and 912-S's out there - you just have to keep your eyes open....
Rotech are the Canadian distributor, and have an excellent
rebuild facility in Vernon, BC - you can place an order for
the next rebuild they get in, in advance .... not a bad way
to go, if you can wait a while. http://www.rotech.ca
