[rebel-builders] Rebel- door latch

Hi Jesse !

You'll likely be happier with at least 2 latches - I think Wayne used
3 on his. Center handle, with pins to front, back, & bottom, for a
good seal - extra effort because of the cut-out at the lower front to
clear the strut.

There is at least one set - possibly 2 - of CAD drawings for gull doors
around - might be in the Files area.... or ask if someone can send them.

Personally, I would NOT use gull wing doors, especially if you are
going on floats - they are almost impossible to open if you are
upside-down in the water, with all that water pressure on them !!

The regular Rebel doors work fine, and are better for sailing --
and I can dive out that open window anytime !!!

That mod - like most - can add 6 months to your build time....
Like I always say - "Just GET IT FLYING !!!" You can always
change the doors later - IF you still want to ... ;-) :-)--

have a one piece door hinged at the top. Thanks.

Bob,
Thanks for the comments. Too late, I already added the wedge in the opening. I have seen the cad drawings, just wondering if anyone has tried a single latch. As for emergency egress, I will have sliding windows which should be as good as anything if underwater.

Hi Jesse,
I have the gull wing doors and just love them for float operations. No
dodging doors while docking in particular.
I did do the 3 pin on a bellcrank. I'm not sure I'd be happy with just one
pin. IMHO the door is so flexible that even if it fit perfect in the
beginning, over time there may be conflicts.
As a side to this, where the pins go into the fuselage I added a piece of
.40 as a latch plate. When I mounted the plate I kept it hanging over the edge
of the fuselage so if the pins are extended when the door is being shut it
hits the latch plate and will not leave a nice ding in your new paint job.
I think there may be pic's in the archives of this. If not, let me know and
I'll try and find them.

Thanks Curt,
I looked again on the archives and I only see one picture of a gull wing door on a Rebel (actually titled "photo of gull wing door on an Elite") And there are the cad drawings too. If you can find some more pics, I would love to see them.
Glad to hear you like them on floats. That's the main reason I am going to the trouble. The Rebel door is so wide it seems like it would really get in the way. Being wider than it is tall seems to make it a natural to hinge it at the top.

Another reason for gullwing doors might be to make it easier to stuff long and wide (although light) things into the back of the cabin. With the regular doors, they open to the front and are stopped at the strut. Long wide things then need to fit through the window, or else they can't go in. I have run into that a few times with my Rebel.

A disadvantage, though, might be not being able to open a window in flight for pics, etc., not that I do that a lot. Unless, I guess, you still have a window that can open.

If on floats, be sure that the door can be easily opened with your latch mechanism, just in case of that rare unplanned event where you might find yourself upside down in the water. Ideally, you should be able to kick it open. I know with the regular door, that's all it takes (not that I have tried it underwater).

Like I always say - "Just GET IT FLYING !!!" You can always
change the doors later - IF you still want to ... ;-) :-)--

Hi guys,
I am designing the gull wing doors on mt Rebel. Can someone tell me if
one
latch at the bottom of the door will be enough? I would use a cam type
latch like on a camper shell. Plan B would be to have central handle and
a
rod to each side of the door like a J-3. Just to be clear though, I will
have a one piece door hinged at the top. Thanks.
Jesse
