I say go for it. By all I've heard the C-90 puts out just as much power as
an 0-200. Way back in the earlly nineties when I bought my kit I was told
by someone ( maybe former salesman Dave Walker ) that the rebel was
designed to use an 0-200. The reason they went with rotax and lycoming is
that back then continental wouldn't sell engines to homebuilders. The nice
part of using a well known engine is that if it doesn't work out you'll be
able to sell it for pretty close to what you paid.

Reminder to those using "certified" airplane engines regarding re-sale. If
you want to retain your ability to re-sell an engine as "certified" you must
keep it certified. That means all ADs complied with (good idea even if you
allow it to lapse into "experimental" status). I'm not sure, but I wouldn't
be surprised if the annual condition inspection on the engine has to be
accomplished by an A&P with inspection authority (IA) to keep it
"certified". There might be other certification issues as well, such as
operation with a prop not approved for that engine.

Mike,
That is something I hadn't thought of but you are right. I still feel it would help the re-sale though if I were to ever sell to have a Continental vs a Rotax. But with fuel prices rising I think more people will be using the Rotax. I'm still quite a ways from having to make that decision so never know what will be available by the time I need one.

I bought my engine when I found it! Wayne advise on this site that someone have 0-235 for sale. I think I done a good deal, but I wiil be
sure only when I will put it in service.... If you wait until the last minute for a new engine it is ok but for a used ... it is mre risky

Good luck

[rebel-builders] How about a C-90 in the Rebel

I'd probably grab the C-90 if the price is right!

Personally I'd pay more for a plane with a low time Rotax than a low
time Continental. However I'd prefer the Continental if comparing high
time engines. Parts are reasonably priced (compared to Lycoming) and the
Continental is easy to rebuild. I would not care whether the Continental
was still "certified". I think it extremely unlikely that it would ever
find it's way back into a certified bird regardless. I've never been
particularly impressed with "professionally" maintained engines but I do
value a professional inspection at the time of purchase.

For discussion - I'd expect the C-90 to perform somewhere in between a
912 and a 912S and I'd expect similar fuel consumption. ;)

[rebel-builders] How about a C-90 in the Rebel

Hi Keith !

Sounds like it would work ! Better grab it, though - you can be
sure it won't be around when you're ready !! The -12 is good, because
you'll have electrics, although it'd be good to switch to a lightweight
starter & alternator - could save yourself 30 lb. or so ....

With the variable pitch prop, you should be able to cruise a bit
faster that a 912, but likely won't quite match the takeoff & climb ...
since you'll definitely be heavier - but still likely LSA legal, without
a lot of load capacity left. Ooooops - forgot .... you can't have a
variable pitch prop for LSA !!! In that case, a regular 912
will definitely beat you all around - but you will have spent
less money ....

If it's going to be more than a year, you should keep an eye
out for a used or overhauled 912 or 912-S ... there are a few
coming along. (Or you could pick up one of those 10,000+ hour,
ex-military 914 turbos that turn up fairly often -- the price is
usually right !! ;-) )
