I agree Ian. I have read more good than bad about the Rotax 912. Not sure I can forget that kind of price for 100HP. Last I checked it was approx. $22,000+ FWF including prop.

Heck, I recently purchased a totally restored 7AC-CONV Champ that has a Lyc O-235 in it for not much more than the price of a new Rotax!! This is a well built Champ with VG's, 39 gallons of total fuel available, droop tips, strobes, etc set up for floats. The engine is 400 hr. SNEW. I got the plane for $25,000 and an extra $10,000 got me the skis and floats. $35,000 for the plane on 8.50x6 tires(now has 26"AkBushwheels), floats, and skis....it was a heck of a deal....and it is LSA!!! 409 useful load on wheels is its only downside. I do get a few more pounds on floats though. I've heard these Champs fly fine a little over gross. So it'll do what I need....just hate dealing with all the certified crap and getting parts for these old planes can get problematic at times.

Now back to the Rotax.....It'll probably be the engine I finally end up using unless I turn total outlaw and build it with the O-320 and fly without a medical.....but I wouldn't do that. I don't think. LOL
It will be on skis and floats most of the time so I sure could use the extra HP.

Thanks,
Keith

[rebel-builders] Rotax 912 100 hp

G'day Keith

Here in Australia we have a limit of 544kg MTOW in the "ultralight" category
and we can fly without all the dramas of medicals. I wanted to get a 'plane
that fitted that category and the Rebel was my choice, but if I put a Lyco
(etc) in it along with the metal prop (etc) there wouldn't be much carrying
capacity left, so the Rotax was my choice.

There are many engine alternatives available such as the Jabiru 3.3, the
Rotec and many car engine derivatives but what I have seen of them did not
fill me with confidence.

There are a number of Rotax in a flying school here and they are flogged
mercilessly from daylight to dark and they are now all high time engines and
have had no problems ever! All of the others that I mentioned have all had
failures.

My Rotax ticks over like a Swiss watch, burns 17 litres an hour and pulls
the Rebel along at 85k and this is always at gross weight. What I have found
is, as long as I can shut the doors, the Rebel can fly!

What more could you ask?

Regards

Ian
