[rebel-builders] Rebel - Engine question...again

Hi Charlie !

Think there might be an O-200 Rebel or 2 out there somewhere ....

I flew a Rebel with a Lycoming O-235-C2C for over 7 years ...
rated at 100 hp, and 108 hp. for 5 minutes at takeoff ... The
Lycosaurus is a bit heavier than the Clunktinental, but not much ...
Performance would be similar, or maybe a bit worse.

Takeoff was about 300 - 350 feet, climb about 750 -800 fpm solo,
and about 600 ft./ 500 - 600 fpm loaded. Cruise was 85 - 90 mph...
with a McCauley metal prop. Empty weight was 835 lb. ..
Fuel burn was about 5 1/2 - 6 gph, and a quart of oil every 12 - 15 hr.

During the same time period, my wife had a Rebel with the
80 hp. Rotax 912 ... It took off in about 150 ft., and climbed about
950 fpm solo, 600 fpm loaded, cruised at 97 mph consistently,
burning 3 1/2 gph, and less in winter .... and 1/8" of oil in 50 hr.
That Rebel weighed 716 lb. empty.

The only time the Lycosaurus was <slightly> more desireable was
fully loaded, on a hot summer day ... a bit more climb. The 100 hp
Rotax would have been much better, because it's lighter.

(It might be that the USD has fallen 30 %, not that Rotax have
increased prices that much ...... ;-( )

There ARE used 912's available, if you start looking ahead of
time - and overhauled ones come up regularly - you could likely
pre-order one at: http://www.rotec.com
if you have a few months lead time.

I am building my Rebel to gross at 1320 Lbs. so I can fly it as LSA. I had
originally planed on installing a 100 HP Rotax in my Rebel but the price
in the last 8-10 months has increased a good 30+%. and a used Rotax is
rare and hard to find. As a result the 0-200 Cont. is looking a lot better
even though it is 65+ Lbs. heaver then the Rotax. I would like to hear
from any one out there who is flying a Rebel with 0-200 and what kind of
performance they are getting just operating wheels only.

Okay Jean, since it has been so quite I'll throw out a question to see
if we can get these guys away from their fireplaces and on the computer.

Has anyone ever thought of using an Continental C-90 or O-200 on a
Rebel? They put out decent HP and lots of O-200's out there. Just food
for thought.

[rebel-builders] Rebel - Engine question...again

Thanks for the performance figures on the Lyc./Cont engines that is very
helpful when trying to make a desion. You are correct about the price
increase it is the devaluation of the USD that has caused the problem. But
regardless what caused the increase, there is a personal limit as to how
much one is willing to invest for a hobby. I have just started looking for
used/rebuilt Rotax but have only found one so far and it was rather pricey
and had a suspected history. I have the lead time so I will check out your
suggested web site.

Thanks for the help
