A quick not to all builders who are doing their wing skins. The old and new
manuals do not have the same pictures for instructions. I purchased the new
manual and it does not have the drawing i have attached to this e-mail.
Having kit #007 I have may old pages from the manual over the years and
found the attached drawing, very useful. Do not do anything to a wing skin
until you see the picture i have attached or you get a copy from the
factory. There are differance between the root and tip of leading edge, top
and bottom skins. It is very expensive to make a mistake.

Mike's Rebel is Serial Number 7 !!

Many things have changed !!!! The current wing skin attach
method was designed by Brian Cross and adapted by the factory MANY
years ago, and is the method in current manuals. It is MUCH easier
than the method originally used, and described in the manuals of
the first 100 (or so ...) Rebels !

Bob, Roger, All,

Mike is not talking about how to do the fuel tanks. He is warning that there
are left and right skins due to the hole spacing on the prepunched skins!
(Isn't that right Mike?) Replacement skins are in the neighbourhood of $600+
(Canadian) for a leading edge, $500 for top skin and just over $400 for
bottom skin. Make sure you have them oriented right (or left) the first
time, as those prepunched holes make a $60 sheet of aluminum very expensive!
If I am not mistaken the newer kits have the "extra" leading edge rib at the
6 inch mark already prepunched, which should remove some of the mystery as
to left or right.

Hi all

Wayne is correct about my concern with the wing skins. The problem I had was
that the new manual I purchased in sept 1999 did not indicated there was a
differance between left and right top and bottom due to hole spacing at the
root and tip It is very easy to select the wrong one as I had done for a
little while until finding a picture in old manual.

I might also add that if anyone goes to Wrays web sight
(http://webhome.idirect.com/~wrayt/) he has the same picture scanned in his
section on wing construction. I also put this picture in pictures section of
dcsol web site called wing2.bmp (sorry its scanned backwards but still can
be read) ftp://ftp.dcsol.com/murphy-rebel/rebel/

I thought it would be better to cause a small panic than have some parts
almost destroyed .

Ok.... There always were differences. It IS important not to
get them turned inside-out, tooooooo ..... (Good idea to use a
marker to indicate root end and outside surface ..)

The top skins should be easy, though, as the fuel filler hole
is now pre-punched - hard to miss a big hole like that ! ;-)

seeing a pre-punched fuel fill hole. I'm pretty sure there wasn't any, but I
could very well be wrong.

If there were no hole, how do you tell inside from outside?

at the factory - might have been a Super wing ???

Anyway, you would just mark the skins as left or right, outside,
as I believe they are interchangeable, once flipped ....

Roger, Bob and All,

The fuel filler hole <IS> pre-punched in the SR fuel tank skins and most
likely now done on the Rebel fuel tank skins (not punched in the wing skins
themselves though on the rebel, due to choices of tank sizes or no tank at
all). It is punched undersize in my honest opinion though, as it forces you
to rivet the filler neck on top of the tank skin instead of hidding the
mounting flange inside the tanks (which is a cleaner looking installation)!
The hole needs to be opened up about 3/16 in diameter to facilitate
installation of the neck through it, instead of on top of it!

Roger if you check your wing skins you will find that both top skins and
both bottom skins are punched exactly the same! The leading edges are left
and rights. The hole spacing is closer together (more holes) between ribs at
the root end as opposed to the tip end of all the skins.

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, it doesn't matter which side of the
skin faces in, or faces out, as long as the edges are properly positioned
(leading edge to front; root edge to root, etc?).

And thanks Wayne for the info on Scotchbrite. I have not been using it on
the mating surfaces before chromating. I wasn't aware that I should.

That is correct Roger, but if you are lucky, you may have received skins
that have been punched so you can get the manufactures ink on the inside,
instead of showing on the outside! (Usually end up with one skin on each
wing showing ink though!) Some is hard to clean off if going "bare" and the
Red ink will bleed through a paint job if not COMPLETELY removed!

Yes you should clean all mating surfaces before chromating, otherwise you
will be sealing in manufacturing oils, dirt, and possibly some corrosion
(that you are trying to seal OUT) under the chromate or epoxy EP420, or what
ever you are using to corrosion proof!

Keep at it, it's worth it!
