[rebel-builders] Great Northern Ramble

You've got my interest, Garry. Too early to commit for 2010, but sounds like
one of those lifetime opportunities that I hate to miss. Certainly wouldn't
want to attempt that one on my own.

Speaking of Rambles, etc., the year 2009, as many of you know, is Canada's
100th anniversary of flight celebration, and I know there are a few planned
X Canada excursions.

And for 2008, coming up, might plan my own mini ramble to Manitoba in July.
But that's just a 1 day trip for me, weather permitting... Of course, will
always be doing our own local BC trips and Arlington every year too. I think
Steve Sloan and Richard (with the 210 hp Rebel) were also planning an Alaska
trip in 2008. I would like to do that sometime, too.

Now if I could just afford to retire,... then would have lots of time for
this type of fun.

This should be the only missive on this subject on this website since
there is a separate mail list for the rambles. I simply want to get
everyones attention and then off to the ramble list.

I am in the conceptual stages of planning a ramble which would occur
over about a 3 week period in June of 2010. This ramble would probably
start near Winnipeg and head north to eventually reach the southernmost
limits of the Arctic Ocean (near Coppermine), thence through Yellowknife
and Whitehorse and likely back through Williston reservoir or perhaps
Margaret Lake in the Caribou formation in northern Alberta. The route
would roughly follow the route of George Erickson in his book True North
and be very dependent upon who participates, where they come from etc.

The more aircraft the better and part of that is going to be a strong
effort to ensure that the mission is suited to wheeled aircraft,
floatplanes and amphibs. The mission is simply flying and fishing and
trying to stay undamaged by mosquitoes and flies.

Fuel in the north is always a consideration so that is the big reason
for the long lead time. It will have to be shipped up the summer before
to anywhere that regular purchases are not available. The other reason
is making it possible for as many as can to attend. Lots of warning is
sometimes helpful for that. In this case, the more aircraft, the less
logistical problems will exist as they can share spares, tools etc.

I would strongly recommend George Erickson's book mentioned above as an
introduction to this concept. Note I have not called this a Rebel Ramble
because I'm hoping for a wider interest from a wide variety of people.
Some time this winter I plan to place an ad in the COPA newspaper to try
to drum up some interest from outside the Murphy cadre.

The floor is open, I look forward to a broad and lively discussion.

Garry

[rebel-builders] Great Northern Ramble

Hi Walter !

If you're heading East next year anyway, maybe you can
come a bit farther, and join the Rebel Ramble to Quebec City !
Planned dates are July 12th to 19th, 2008. More details soon...

If it helps anyone with planning, to celebrate Canada's
100 years of flight, we are planning once more to Ramble
to BOTH Coasts in 2009 - dates TBD, but likely 1st 3 weeks
of July, and last week (or so ...) of August, 2009.

We will be happy to help Garry with the Great Northern
Ramble in 2010 - might even come along, if we win a lottery ! :-)

[rebel-builders] Great Northern Ramble

A "bit further"?? One thing I still remember very well from my last trip is
how long it takes to get across Ontario. Can't remember the exact mileage,
but I think it was further than going from Vancouver to Manitoba.

Anyway, would love to do it, Bob, but just have so much time, and money.
Speaking of which, I think flying on floats must be close to double the
fuel, too, than on wheels, especially with the 912 or soobie. Of course if I
slow down about 10 mph, it's a lot less too. Am hoping that my new engine
with the EI will save me another 1 gph at cruise. Every little bit helps.

But 2009 is a possibility.

This sounds like a very interesting and challenging trip. Having been up to the tip of Manitoba close to the Territories several times, that part could be manageable. Beyond there will be no question about finding fuel along the way, not an impossible task but as others have mentioned, cost could be quite an issue.
Definitely worth pursuing as it truly would be a lifetime experience.
Keep us posted. Thanks

[rebel-builders] Great Northern Ramble

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:17 pm

I grew up in Manitoba as a kid, and used to make the occasional trek up
north to the Thompson, Snow Lake and Flin Flon areas for fishing. Since I
have been flying, I have always wanted to go back there sometime on floats
to do some more fishing. I am thinking mid to end of July, but haven't
worked out dates yet. There are some family events (have a brother and
sister that still live there) that I need to work around as well. But would
be great to have one or more floatplanes along. Will let you know more as I
firm up plans. We also have our local BCFA and Arlington trips that I don't
want to miss here.

Steve Sloan and Richard (with the 210 hp Rebel) were also planning an Alaska
trip in 2008. I would like to do that sometime, too.

Now if I could just afford to retire,... then would have lots of time for
this type of fun.

Subject: [rebel-builders] Great Northern Ramble

Garry

I'm interested in principal. How does one access the "Rambler's List" to
which you refer?

Alan,

I think you can subscribe to it just like this one, i.e., send a blank
email to:

rebel-ramble-subscribe@dcsol.com

Hi Alan,

If that doesn't work, go to the website where you see the archives and
files etc. There is also a subscription menu item where you can select
the ramble.
