[rebel-builders] Corvair powered Rebel

A few people here have tried Corvairs on things like
Pietenpols .... underpowered, and a lot of trouble ...
... couple of crashes.

Apparently there are a few folks in the US who have
finally figured them out, and are flying ok ....
one on a Zenair 601 Zodiac ...

No Rebels, AFAIK ....

Personally, I wouldn't even consider it !
But - it's your choice !! That's what makes homebuilding !

I would like to know if anyone is flying a Rebel using the Corvair engine.
Any ideas about this pro and con?

There was coverage of some good Corvair conversions maybe a year ago in
Contact! magazine ( http://www.contactmagazine.com/ ). I don't see it
mentioned in their back issue list, but I'll see if I find it at home this
evening. My impression was greatly improved after reading it. There are
some real Corvair auto enthusiasts with enf experience to make a solid
engine on a small budget. It would suffer being a little over 3k rpm for
it's power (~120hp) but perhaps a var pitch prop could remedy some of that.

BTW, I 'd recommend Contact! for anyone wanting to keep an eye out for
alternative engine possibilities. In that vein, they are even good at
showing just how great a Lyc or Lyc-clone can be.

I've read some information on the web regarding crankshaft failures with the corvaire engine when one asks it to produce more than ~105 hp without nitrating the crank. The failures appear to be of fatigue in nature and were on direct drive props. I've also noticed that the folks at flycorvaire.com don't offer their largest displacement option anymore; possibly for this very reason. If one wants <105 hp, this engine seems very intriguing. If one wants >105 hp then some serious work should be considered for the crank or go with a PRSU that increases hp thru rpm instead of torque. This last option might cost as much or more initially than a used Lycoming, but sounds a lot better come rebuild time. After all that is said, the corvaire is still a six cylinder engine, I for one couldn't fault anyone for installing it just for that reason!

If anyone wants first hand info on running/flying a corvair engine and the
pitfalls... send me an email direct and I'll put you in contact with an X
corvair pilot. He gave up on his and is a professional mechanical engineer.
