While I don't yet have the credibility of a completed (and flying!) Rebel with a
Corvair powerplant, this is the combination I have decided to go with. I have
been following William Wynne's work on corvair flight engines for several years
now. (
www.flycorvair.com) There are at LEAST 16 Zenith Zodiac 601s, 6
KR2s, 2 Sonex, countless Pietenpols, 1 Skycoupe, and 1 Wagabond
(particularly relevant to the Rebel) flying with corvair engines in front of them.
We all know non-certified flight engines are a hotly debated topic. Let's face
it, there are still those that think liquid-cooled auto conversions are far too
heavy and complex to be in the air: but look how many Rebels are running
Subarus. I'm fairly conservative when it comes to safety (that's why I'm
building a Rebel) so throughout the decision-making and building stages, I
have simply been watching the corvair numbers speak for themselves. Along
with the steady rise in numbers of planes flying, William is a graduate of
Embry-Riddle, a pilot, he and his crew are certified A and P's, and he's been
continuously refining his conversion package for over 10 years. His operation
is very much like that of Great Plains' support for VW flight engines. It's
worth a look.
