[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Hi Walter: yes there is a trick; - do the two (2) bottom mounts first, then
lift the engine further to do the top. Also the Engine has to be tight to
the mount for the holes to line up. I played with the Rebel I am working on
for over an hour to get the engine mounted trying the top first. Also if you
leave the engine side rubber mounts protruding slightly it will give you
more leeway to start the top bolts and as you tighten you can tap the
mounts back into position. Have fun. Bob J

Was trying to do my engine mount today, and see that these dynafocal ones
are not as easy to do as my old conical mount. Is there a trick to getting
the four bolts in to the engine and compressing the barry mounts. I find
that I can get a couple in first, but then the others don't fit. Do I have
to tighten two of them all the way before the other bolts will fit the
holes?

Also, does anyone know the correct AN bolt size? I know they are 7/16, but
until I can compress the rubbers, it's hard to determine the final length.
I
am just fitting it with temporary hardware bolts for now.

Walter

Put one bolt in at a time and fully torque it. I started with the top left bolt, torqued it down. Then the tip right. Also torqued it down. Then slowly lowered the engine down from the hoist and
It takes some doing but you can get the bottom holes to line up. Get one of the bottoms to line up and torque it. Then the last one. I know of some who have made taper bolts by grinding down old bolts to help with alignment.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Will give it another try. Kind of figured that is
how I will have to do it, but didn't want to miss out on an easier method if
there was one. I was also thinking of using a C clamp on the others.

Yeah, they sound about right. The ones I just tried were 3.5 inches, and I
think were a little short. Yup, those conical ones are sure a lot easier to
mount. Will see now if the dynafocal really do make for less vibration on
the airframe.

Yes, your guy should be pretty happy with the climb using the 54 pitch on
wheels/skis.

Those are the bolts listed in the install info...and pretty darn sure what
was in the engine mount kit...and they worked. May have needed a couple
extra washers..can't remember for sure. Bob p's flying the last one that I
put a Dynafocal on. The one I just put your removed FWF on was conical, as
you know, and it just left for Montreal around noon today.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:10 pm
by Eric Fogelin
About 9 months ago (plus or minus), I picked up my dynafocal mount from
Murphy. A few weeks later, I got a message that there was a bad jig and some
of the mounts were off. Mine was okay and I have no problems getting the
bolts through the Barry mounts. No special torquing or bolt insertion order.

So, if your Murphy mount was manufactured early 2007, that could be the
problem.

I know they are 7/16, but
until I can compress the rubbers, it's hard to determine the final length

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

AN7-35A Overall length - underside of head to tip of bolt = 3 3/4"

Well, tried again today with the mount on the firewall, and still no luck.
Had to move my battery box on the firewall first, and that took a while,
so
didn't have time to exhaust all my attempts. But I could not get more than
the bottom two in place, tightened them down, but the top holes were still
out by a half inch or so, even after tightening the engine with the hoist.

I am still using temporary bolts, but can see now that I would not want to
do this twice. Does anyone know the exact length bolts required for these
mounts?

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Those are the bolts listed in the install info...and pretty darn sure what
was in the engine mount kit...and they worked. May have needed a couple
extra washers..can't remember for sure. Bob p's flying the last one that I
put a Dynafocal on. The one I just put your removed FWF on was conical, as
you know, and it just left for Montreal around noon today.

So, if your Murphy mount was manufactured early 2007, that could be the
problem.

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:10 pm
by Drew Dalgleish
Hi Walter In one of the tony Bingelis books he suggests putting the mount
on the engine before attaching the mount to the firewall. You might want to
try that. The other thing to try is make yourself a couple taper pins by
cutting off the head of a bolt and grind down the other end to a tapered
point. tap those in to line up the holes then use the permanent bolt to
drive the taper pin out the other side. If there's not enough clearance on
the other side you might have to cut pieces off as the pin emerges.

At 07:03 AM 12/3/2007 -0800, you wrote:

Was trying to do my engine mount today, and see that these dynafocal ones
are not as easy to do as my old conical mount. Is there a trick to getting
the four bolts in to the engine and compressing the barry mounts. I find
that I can get a couple in first, but then the others don't fit. Do I have
to tighten two of them all the way before the other bolts will fit the
holes?

Also, does anyone know the correct AN bolt size? I know they are 7/16, but
until I can compress the rubbers, it's hard to determine the final length

[rebel-builders] Dynalfocal mount installation

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:10 pm
by WALTER KLATT
Thanks, any and all tips welcome, the more the merrier. With all the tough things I have done with building and servicing my Rebel, I can't believe the challenge with this one, especially when others say it was a piece of cake for them.

Speaking of tough jobs, I still remember a year ago, when I changed my O-rings in my amphib main gear cylinder without removing it, and just working through the cap hole at the top. Other than a few skinned knuckles, that was easy compared to getting this dynafocal mount installed to the engine.

Hi Walter In one of the tony Bingelis books he suggests putting
the mount
on the engine before attaching the mount to the firewall. You
might want to
try that. The other thing to try is make yourself a couple taper
pins by
cutting off the head of a bolt and grind down the other end to a
taperedpoint. tap those in to line up the holes then use the
permanent bolt to
drive the taper pin out the other side. If there's not enough
clearance on
the other side you might have to cut pieces off as the pin emerges.

At 07:03 AM 12/3/2007 -0800, you wrote:
That shouldn't be the case with mine as it came out of another
airplane.>However, it sure doesn't seem like an easy fit so far.
Will try again next
weekend.

About 9 months ago (plus or minus), I picked up my dynafocal
mount from
Murphy. A few weeks later, I got a message that there was a bad
jig and some
of the mounts were off. Mine was okay and I have no problems
getting the
bolts through the Barry mounts. No special torquing or bolt
insertion order.
So, if your Murphy mount was manufactured early 2007, that
could be the
problem.

Well, tried again today with the mount on the firewall, and
still no luck.
Had to move my battery box on the firewall first, and that took
a while, so
didn't have time to exhaust all my attempts. But I could not
get more than
the bottom two in place, tightened them down, but the top holes
were still
out by a half inch or so, even after tightening the engine with
the hoist.
I am still using temporary bolts, but can see now that I would
not want to
do this twice. Does anyone know the exact length bolts required
for these
mounts?

Thanks for the tips, guys. Will give it another try. Kind of
figured that is
how I will have to do it, but didn't want to miss out on an
easier method if
there was one. I was also thinking of using a C clamp on the others.

Put one bolt in at a time and fully torque it. I started
with the top left
bolt, torqued it down. Then the tip right. Also torqued
it down. Then
slowly lowered the engine down from the hoist and
It takes some doing but you can get the bottom holes to line
up. Get one of
the bottoms to line up and torque it. Then the last
one. I know of some
who have made taper bolts by grinding down old bolts to help
with alignment.

Hi Walter: yes there is a trick; - do the two (2) bottom mounts
first, then
lift the engine further to do the top. Also the Engine has to
be tight to
the mount for the holes to line up. I played with the Rebel I
am working on
for over an hour to get the engine mounted trying the top
first. Also if you
leave the engine side rubber mounts protruding slightly it will
give you
more leeway to start the top bolts and as you tighten you can
tap the
mounts back into position. Have fun. Bob J
