[rebel-builders] Brake caliper clearance

Hi Jesse,
Yes I think you should be concerned about only 1/16" clearance, tires
flex from taxi, landings, or low air pressure. I expect that I will
have the same problem with my JDM wheels and 8.50 tires. Also mine are
not drilled for the tubes that I have with the straight stems.
Please keep us posted on your results.

Now I am worried about the calipers gouging the tires. I only have about
1/16 clearance. Is that sufficient, or do I need to change something?
Can you add a washer or two between the brake rotors and the spacer?
That would probably do the trick. Else I can take the caliper over to
the belt sander and have at it. I also thought about asking MAM for a
slightly thicker spacer, as it is cut from the same extrusion as the
wheel center piece. If none of those ideas work out, I could make a thin
spacer to go in there. Washers would be the easiest though.
Thanks
Jesse

Hi Jesse !

1/16" is definitely not enough to allow for expansion.
Don't think grinding the caliper would be good ...

There should be no problem getting a thicker spacer
from Murphy - they can cut to whatever measurement you
give them. That might be safer than washers, as the load
will be transferred all around ...

Ok thanks Bob,
I will pursue that. What sounds like a safe gap ? 3/16"? At some point I will have to find longer through bolts which might be a real pain, or counter bore the front holes. It looks looks like it is good for another 1/8" without doing that. That would be using a thin washer under the bolts, and locktite on the nuts cus there wouldn't be much thread in the plastic stopper part.
Dick, I can give you more details of my tube/valve escapade if you want. It came out pretty good I think. If I had to do it over though I would wait for AK Bushwheels to come out with their 8.50s cus they are tubeless, and the valve stem is in the tire sidewall. It doesn't go through the wheel.
