chromate tape

While in the repair stage on my floats, I came across a small quantity
of 'chromate tape' described by the owner as the traditional sealer for
floats in the bush. Small lumps can be molded into any shape and it has
good adhesion to metal even when wet.

I have been unable to find this anywhere and references on the web lead
nowhere. Anyone know what I'm referring to and the proper name of this
stuff?

I am not familiar with a source of a clay like chromate compound at present. However, I was told some years ago by a friend that ran the MCAS Cherry point repair station that there was a modeling clay consistency chromate compound for use as corrosion control under removable plates on carrier planes that he called dum-dum.
