[rebel-builders] Flaperon Frame Preservation
Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:05 pm
Hi Rich !
Many builders don't put anything on the flapperons -
get good adhesion with the Polyfiber Poly-Tack on bare
aluminum. Other parts <could> be coated with a light
coat of PolyFiber EP-430 - the FACTORY APPROVED
corrosion proofer ....
With the 6061-T6 used on the Rebel, you really
don't need to worry about corrosion proofing on the
flapperons - just be sure to put drain holes on the
bottom, next to each rib.

Hi Guys!
So I built Flaperon number one, and I carefully applied AFS Waterborne Poly
Primer/Sealer to it as a preservative coating. And despite the claim from
the AFS factory that it was compatible with fabric coating systems, I wiped
a little MEK on it as a test and it...failed. Came right off. Bummer!
I am told that, because fabric glue uses MEK as a thinner, AFS is a
non-starter now. So, what to do?
Obviously, I can take off the coating on the flanges and skin that will
touch fabric glue. What do I put on those surfaces? Zinc chromate? Two
part Poly from Dupont? Nothing?
What do I coat the other three frames with?
Thanks!
Rich
