I too tried to contact the MAM site last night and a note came up saying the
site was unavailable.

With regards to rivets I spoke to Brian Godden and Elaine and arranged for an
exchange of 10000 rivets. The approach from MAM is that the older rivets will
be adequate on any joint thicker than about .050" and all interior parts
where a mandrel protruding slightly won't matter. The 10000 replacement
rivets are supposedly for the external parts where skins are being installed
and the joint may be only .032" where you definitely don't want to have to
file a head down. MAM state that the older rivets are structurally adequate
and this is the info they also received from their supplier RIVETS UNLIMITED.
It appears that RU have told MAM that the rivets are adequate and as a result
MAM is being forced to eat the cost of the bad rivets we are sending back for
replacement.

So far the AVEX rivets and some 1000 Textron rivets I received from another
source are 100%.

I used a number of CS1213 countersink rivets this past weekend and had a few
mandrels protruding similarly to the RU rivets so it would seem that RU
rivets in general should be avoided for ascetic purposes!!!

Best approach is contact the factory. Arrange to send back rivets. I mailed
mine, cost approx $14 and received new ones within about 2 weeks by mail

If you have a bad batch of rivets from MAM, they have said send them back
with your serial number and they will replace them with new rivets from the
old manufacture they used to use (the good ones). Address the box to
shipping with the contents and serial number clearly marked. $35 for 10,000
rivets to go from Toronto to BC via ground shipping

Good Luck

Hi Folks

I have tried for the last couple of days to access the MAM site and have
been met with the message "does not have a DNS entry". Is it my ISP
(firewall?) or is the site down?

The rivets part is why I want to go there, to find the details of the
bad rivet issue to quote them in my communication.

Has any one contacted MAM yet about replacement rivets? What was the
response? How is the replacement handled, exchange of rivets or does
MAM just send them out?

Thanks

Dave R.

I've had the same problem here in the midwest of the USA. So it's not you
or
you're ISP.

Roger and Alice,
Your message prompted me to inspect my assembled parts. My Fin-33
attach bracket is
.125 thick. The spar and doubler have an assembled/combined thickness of
.110" at the
flanges. Each piece appears to be .050" thick. The three piece assembly
after riveted
with 1613's measured .230 with a micrometer. I wonder if the spar or the
doubler was
thickened up? My Rebel is S/N 446. Any and all comments welcomed.
Thanks,
Rick D.

I've riveted the Fin Stabilizer Attach Bracket (FIN-33) to the Fin Main
Spar
(ST-27) with the RV-1613 rivets as called for in the manual (9.3; #3).
The
mandrel head on all 9 rivets does not appear to have pulled very far at
all
into the barrel of the rivet. In most cases the end of the rivet barrel
does
not wrap past the point of the mandrel head's maximum diameter.

I measured the thickness of the assembled parts (attach brkt; spar; and
doubler) at .280 inch thick. The manual says the RV-1613's grip length
is
1/4 inch. All three pieces appear to be mated firmly against each other
(no
burr's, and chromated between the parts).

I did not like the looks of the RV-1613's. I drilled them out and
replaced
them with RV-1619's which, according to the manual, have a grip length
of
3/8ths inch.

I could not see any problem doing so. However, being new at this, I
wanted
to ask for (anyone's) opinions.

I faxed this question to MAM Tech last week but have not had a response
from
them. I'm assuming they are probably all at Arlington.

David,

After reading your message I tried to access the Murphy site was given
the message that the site was not available.

I read their communication on rivets and felt it was a little vague.
They acknowledge a problem can exist but did not go so far as to say they
were replacing everything they have shipped. I believe the message was
to contact the factory for further information. I have a little while
before I am ready so I have not contacted them yet to find out how they
are handling the situation.
