Trim Servo-wire connections

All,

I'm trying to figure out how to connect the short lengths of 26 guage wires
coming off the trim servo unit to the length of 5 strand 26 guage cable
that runs through the elevator and out the root rib.

Menzimer, the manufacturer of the servo unit, told me:

"Connectors are hard to find and surprisingly expensive. We used to have
connectors avaliable about 5 years ago, but our vendor discontinued them.
Radio shack has some inexpensive small round DIN connectors available.
We always prefer the solderable type of connector rather than the crimp
type, or just solder and heatshrink the wires in place.

My catalogs sell nothing smaller than 22 guage connectors. I've browsed the
local radio shack and did not find anything, nor did I find anything on
their website.

Could any of you offer some advice on how you made this connection? Or a
source of connectors? Type of connector? etc.

Roger,
Thanks for the feedback on the fin attach bracket. This is a critical area that will
surely get inspected often.
As for the small wires, I have spliced 18 Ga wire onto the small wire and then covered
the splice with shrink sleeving.

I purchased a five pin microphone connector from Radio Shack. I plan to
remove the two metal end covers, solder the wires to the connectors, seal
the ends with shrink wrap and secure the connector so that it can't move.
If I can find the connector I will give you a part number.

I work in the aircraft engine business world and have been involved in
some of the failure investigations for our engine cables and their
associated connectors. I'll acknowledge up front that the servo unit
connectors won't be in as severe environment as engine connectors. With
that said, I still won't be using Radio Shack connectors on my Rebel.

With the Radio Shack connectors there is no guarantee of pin plating
material, plating thickness, diameter of the male pins, diameter of the
female pin or the spring tension of the female pins. My opinion, if you
are going to use a connector spend the extra and buy Mil Standard
connectors where the critical features have to conform to proven
requirements.

If you don't want to spend the money on connectors, solder and heat
shrink. Just remember to secure the joints for they don't flex and
break. Also, leave slack in the wire around the joint so that the joint
isn't stressed.

Could you give me a suggestion as to an appropriate mil standard connector
(and a source)? I'm not keen on using Radio Shack either.

AC 43.13-1B describes many different connector types by their MS number,
however it is still confusing to this novice.

My idea is a five pin (female) socket on one side of the connection, a five
pin (male) plug on the other, which would thread together and be water
tight. This would allow me to easily disconnect the servo unit in the event
it ever had to be removed. A wall type receptacle could work if it could be
installed in the adjacent rib?

Richard,

I recently red your message re: connectors. In the
past I have used a "molex"connector. These are used
on radio controlled airplanes and cars. They are
available through hobby shops. Cost about 6.00 a
pair. Give it a try.

Roger,

I haven't worked in the accessory area for a little over 2 years so I
don't have the connector catalogs readily available. Give me a couple of
days to get with the fellows in my old area and then I will send you a
recommendation.

Now I have one for you. In your rivet message you list a replacement
quantity of 8,427 rivets. A message from Mike Le Ber lists an exchange
of 10,000 rivets.

I looked at my packing list last evening and I received over 18,000
RV-1410 rivets with my kit. Is Murphy only exchanging a portion of the
rivets?
