[rebel-builders] Moose - 24V system--new battery

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:05 pm

Hi Ted !

I'm guessing you are using "gel-cell" as a description for a
'mount anywhere, no-spill, no water' battery .... Real gel cell
batteries haven't worked well in aircraft ...

Most builders are using Odyssey brand batteries - they
are recombinant gas glass mat types ... IIRC ... no water,
work well, and come in a variety of sizes & shapes. Should be
easy to mount, either flat on the inside of the firewall, one
on each side, or perhaps in a narrow, vertically stacked rack between
the rudder pedals.... No need for a metal box or drain.

thinking of doing is getting two 12V batteries (each is thinner than one
24V) and mounting them in series to get my required 24V. With two (thin)
12's I can find room to mount them up front.

Any advantages / disadvantages of getting two 12V and hooking them in
series vs a single 24V? Any suggestions for make/model battery?

I don't get along too well with electrical stuff <grin>, so any and all
advice is welcome.

Thanks!

Yes, you're right Bob about the "mount-anywhere, no water, etc" type
batteries. If I can stack a couple in front between the rudder pedals I'm
in business!

Thank you,

Ted

Ted, let us know how that works out. I plan on the same thing. I hope
to use a 28 volt system, two batteries and a tap off for 14 volt
circuits, such as the trim actuators and a few other gadgets. I do have
a 28 to 14 volt converter available which may be easier than designing a
protection circuit, if one is needed at the tap off point.

Several of the 182RG's that I maintain are now using the recombinant
batteries, I will be recommending them to every one in the future as
battery replacement comes due. About 5 years ago we had a regulator
fail on a lead acid battery and it ate a hole in the battery box and SS
firewall. The Zeft--- brand off regulator works well and has
over-voltage protection and low voltage warning as in 79 & later
Cessna's. This unit also has a LED light on it giving condition
information.
