[rebel-builders] Engine cowling

Yes, isn't that a great looking cowl!!... And you get it from MAM.

There will be many here that will try to talk you out of using that cowl, if
you look through the archives. But despite the fact that I hate fiberglass,
I am about to go through all that again, when I install my new engine.

Actually, Bruce Georgen, not sure if he is still on the list now, and he
used to have some pics, but I think he has the best installation of MAM's
fiberglass cowl that I have seen. He actually has four big doors on his, all
hinged to that centre hinge pin, for easy access to his engine, without
having to remove the whole cowl. And he did it without losing all those nice
curves... I think I might try that with my new one.

In the user group under 'rebel/files/float installations" there's a pic at
the bottom labeled "float steps.howard"

Is that a Murphy cowling or some aftermarket company? I like it a lot!
Very streamlined and slick-looking. Anyone know anything?

BTW, I put trailing edges on all four ailerons today. Ready for the next
step. Thanks to all who chimed in regarding the leading edge height.

When my wife and I built our house and shop, there were definitely good days
and bad ones. On the good ones you saw a visual difference or finished
something. On the bad ones you either redid something, broke something, or
spent money you didn't expect to. I have a feeling that building our rebel
will be very similar.

This was a good day. :-) Craig R207

Do you have any pics?

The other thing I like about the MAM fiberglass cowl, is that it provides
for maximum visibility over the front corners of the cowl from the pilot
seat. That is very important to me, when I am coming over trees to land on a
lake and not wanting to cut it too close. That's why I have the lexan on the
bottom of my doors as well, provides better visibility for float flying.

As Walter has already stated that is the Murphy "speed cowling"..but the
exit area has of course been modified, like they all end up to get the temps
down.

Pictures is in my hangar...

Walter, you have the old style speed cowl.

Yes, my old speed cowl was one of the originals, and my prop spacer was only 1.75 inches. Despite that, I didn't have any problems cooling on wheels after my 1st iteration of opening up the bottom exit. Floats, though, was a whole different story, and I did about 3 or 4 iterations before I got good cooling, which I definitely had in the end when I opened up the inlets. My expectations/requirements were pretty high, though. I was not satisfied until I could climb in 95+ F conditions straight up to 8 or 9000 feet without going over 400 CHT. And in cruise on the hottest days, I was about 360. Some guys I have talked to say they have no cooling problems, but then they tell me they hit 450 on climb out. That's higher than I like. I never did have any oil temp issues, with my cooler on the back of the baffles, and actually had it partially taped off most of the year.

With the new cowl and the 360, I will have a 2.5 inch spacer, plus will try to utilize all the learnings from this list and my past experience to try and get it right the 1st time. And I want to have it look good too.

BTW, that pic was not of my plane if that is what you were thinking. Mine was similar but that was Howard's, before it's last rebuild. My tongue and cheek remarks were more for the benefit of those here that don't like the speed cowl.

Walter, you have the old style speed cowl. The newer cowl is
deeper and a bit wider from what I recall as to accept the 0-360
in the Elite - Rebel and Elite speed cowl are the same. We have
never had any cooling issues with our Rebel 0-320 160hp on wheels.
