[rebel-builders] FLAPERONS and VGs

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:01 pm

Ken, I never did try them on the tail on the Rebel because I am on floats,
and never get slow enough to lack elevator authority. But might be
interesting to try on wheels. It might help with landings in planes with a
more forward c of g. Would also be curious if they do anything further on a
cuff wing. Actually, now that I mention it, don't you, Rick (Biggus) also
have cuffs?

With my other plane, I do have them on the hor stab just ahead of the hinge
line, but they don't seem to make a difference. Harrison later told me to
try place them 4 inches ahead, but by that time I had already stuck them on
with the glue. It is a floatplane also, and was losing them too quickly
there on the bottom when just stuck on with double sided tape. I think you
want them about 3 inches apart on the stab.

Common VG theory says that VGs lower stall speed by increasing the angle of
attack before stall. While that is definitely true, I now believe they also
provide lift way before the stall speed, which helps with float take-offs. I
now start my take-off on floats with neutral flaps, and it seems to get lift
pretty early, and then when I apply the flaps after it gains speed on the
step, it is ready to fly almost immediately then. Before the VGs I found
that starting with full flaps was always the best. But now with full flaps
at the start, there seems to be a lot of drag initially, which I assume is a
result of early lift. At least that is what I figure is going on.

Would be interested to know if anyone added cuffs after flying on floats,
and noticed the same thing.

Walter

What about the stabilizer? In between every rivet on the rear spar or
does it need that many? Did it help much?
I purchased the VG's for the stab but haven't tried them yet.
Occasionally a bit more elevator up authority might be nice.
With this leading edge cuff it seems tailwheel first are my best
landings, otherwise it just doesn't want to stay down.

Sounds like wing VG's are well worth it in places that don't have much
snow...

Same with ours !!!

10 % works a treat - ( we used Harrisons VG's too)

Problem is .... now we "touch down" - tailwheel first EVERY time ! ...

(can get exciting ! :o(

I centered mine exactly on the 10 % chord position, as they first
suggested,
and seemed to be perfect. With the other plane, I started at 10, but it
did
hardly anything, and so he suggested 6 or 7, and that's where I ended up
with that one. But the Rebel seemed to work fine at 10%.

Walter,

What position on the wing (chord) did you install your Harrison VG's?
