[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

Hi Guys any help is appreciated;
I am running a 0-360 on my Elite with amphibs weight
1580 lbs.
I had the 76 Sensenich repitched to 56. I am only
turning up 2480 rpm in climb.
Any suggestions to get to the 2700 for 180 hp
I am often operating at 2200 lbs .

Tks

Just another question on the speed, Drew. Have you
done a full power run at
low altitudes and what was the rpm and speed? At
8000, that would be your

altitude.

Sorry Walter I haven't and I probably won't. To me
running at full throttle
straight and level at low altitudes is too hard on
the engine.

[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm
by WALTER KLATT
I was asking earlier about anyone using the 76 X 56 Sensenich prop on an Elite or Rebel floatplane. If you are only getting 2480 on climb out, then it sounds like you need to go finer yet, maybe to 54 pitch. I don't think you want 2700 on climb, as then you would over rev on straight and level. What is your take-off or static rpm before you go into climb? And what is your flat out straight and level rpm with it at 76 X 56?

My target for the 360 (on floats in a Rebel or Elite) would be 2500 on take-off, 2550 on climb and 2700 -2750 on WOT straight and level.

Which amphibs do you have to get that 1580 empty weight?

[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm
by WALTER KLATT
Just to be clear with my question, I consder take-off (intial) and static as the same thing, and climb rpm to be at your best climb rate speed. Sounds like your top speed rpm is OK.

I forget exactly what 2 inches of pitch gives on the Sensenich. I think it is around 30 or maybe 50 rpm. If that is the case, and your tach is accurate, then 76 X 54 might be what you need.

[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm
by Bob Patterson
Hi John !

It sounds like your engine is not developing full power.
It should spin that prop faster....

It might be worth checking the size of your carb air box -
there are a few Elites that had O-320 airboxes fitted ...
They are too small, restricting intake, and causing vibration
too !

Other than that, and the usual checks of compression &
timing, you are right to check the tach with an optical one -
again, there have been a few bad tachs found.

If all that checks out, then your only other course is to go
to a 54 inch pitch ...

John,

Found conflicting data in the prop log book ... the model number stamped on
the prop is

76EM8S10-0-56 ... standard prop vs the written number in the log book as
indicated below for a climb prop.

I'll be running on MFC 2200 amphibs, may want to re-pitch it to the -54
(climb) as well.

Still looking for RPM data.

Cheers, Bob 612e

[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

by John W
Hi Bob

I checked the tach with a digital last nite.
Static 2350
Climb 2470
WOT 2630

Suspect the airbox as it is small hoping to fit a
K&N style air filter as well
Engine checks out just out of annual.

Last nite flying alone at 2050 lbs 60deg F
lite breeze 5-8 mph 2 seconds on step 10-11 out of
the water. Still room for improvement in rpm's,
needless to say I am thrilled so far.

[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

Hi Robert

Thanks for the input. I think I will have the prop
twisted to 54- believe its 37.50 rpms per inch this
should get me 75 on climb.
My logs are at the shop need to check them as well.
How much does your Elite weigh?

[rebel-builders] 360 Prop Elite question

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm
by Walter Klatt
I have also been talking on email to Ed at Sensenich about this, and he
recommends the 54 for our type of floatplane with the 360. He says the 56
should give 2400 static on the 180 hp, and 54 would give 2450. You gain 25
rpm for every inch of pitch.

That's pretty good performance, though, given your weight.

Thanks a lot for the numbers. That helped a lot. Now I have to decide
whether to go 54 or 52 if I go Sensenich. I am wondering what high density
altitude (8000) will do. I think that costs an extra 50 rpm too.

Walter

If you removed the air box or maybe even just the air filter and your
static rpm increased that would let you know if the air box is the culprit.
