Ted,

I did something similar. I created a .040 2024 (much stronger than 6061)
piece that is the shape of the doorpost and the skin forward of the door
post, all one piece. This was placed over the recommended skin. Not quite
as beefy as what you did.

I just uploaded an annotated picture to area 107 S/M-Fuselage showing all
the upgraded structure I added to the side fuselage engine mount (Ref
chapter 9-5 SR2500 Fuselage Assembly, pages 5 - 7 for the standard
assembly).



Why did I do these upgrades? The standard side engine mounts consist of a
piece of 0.125" aluminum channel that sandwiches a piece of 0.250" channel.
The sum total of 0.375" is about 5" long and is riveted to total skin
thickness of 0.072 (0.040 plus a 0.032 doubler). I started to look at that
and wondered why have such a disparity in strength / structure. Anyway, at
a total weight of perhaps 8 to 10 ounces per side (and forward of the datum
line to boot), I added all the additional structure. Now, the side engine
mounts are -really-tied into the door post and seriously reinforced. Maybe
overkill, but again not that much additional weight for a whole lot more
structure.
