[rebel-builders] Paint air-system?

Ted,

For what it's worth. On a previous plane, I utilized a $30 hepa filter mask
from Home Depot. It is designed for painting. I think it is made by 3M (
http://www.coleparmer.com/catalog/produ ... ku=4011201)

The important factor was the hepa filter. Paint can be very dangerous, so
be sure you get a mask that completely seals around your face. Mine had a
seal that went from the bridge of my nose to under my chin and wrapped all
the way around. It had a strap around the base that wrapped around your
neck to hold the seal and another that went around the top of your head. I
completely covered myself (turtle neck, old stocking hat, long pants with
taped legs, gloves, etc.) I just felt that for a one time event it wasn't
worth the $500. I replaced the filters frequently. I also ensured that the
area I was painting in had good airflow. It was a 3 car garage and the flow
would replace the volume in the garage 10 times/hour.

Just some thoughts.

($500+ ouch).

I assume I'll just get a Tyvex disposable suit too.

Thank you for any input, suggestions, advice.

I personally don't mind using a decent organic filter for most paint but
fresh air is a must if spraying urethanes that contain isocyanate
hardeners. No filter mask will protect you from those vapors. A hepa
filter by itself removes fine particles/droplets but won't remove
organic vapor. If paired with charcoal media for organics it will
remove vapors (but not isocyanate) and you won't smell the paint.

I used a citation combination spray turbine and fresh air turbine which
I think is the same as the hobbyair. The mask and fresh air worked well.
The sprayer turbine started leaking current after a few hours and would
not run on GFCI protected line power though. The tyvek hood that came
with the unit took stick on plastic covers. I had a package of them so
that they could be quickly changed as each became hard to see through.
The local farm supply had cheap tyvek and other coveralls. And gloves of
course. The forced fresh air was very welcome for its cooling with the
coveralls on. Eventually I learned to hold the gun closer to the
surface than I was used to in order to avoid "orange peel" and was quite
happy with the overall result.

Some guys have made their own fresh air units with a small vacuum
cleaner,5/8 or 3/4" garden hose, and a cannibalized filter mask. A very
flexible hose is needed for the last few feet and a quick disconnect
(garden hose) for that is helpful.

[rebel-builders] Paint air-system?

Ted

If you have some time & ingenuity (obviously yes to both since you're building a
plane ;-P) you could build an air pump using a central vac or similar blower.
you can see mine at www.elite583.cjb.net, go to the "Other Details" page.

Cheers,

Dave
