Aileron control horn fixed?

Hello!

Concerning the Rebel that I had a rivet head sticking out after deploying on
the root end of the control horn: I drilled it out and the one that it was
butting up against at 90 degrees to it. I was able to get the remaining two
rivets flush, but now I have the inside ends of three rivets rolling around
in
my sealed torque tube. The sound of this rolling around forever will remind
me
of the graceful way I hurdled this obstacle. But will these small pieces
ever
cause my silver bird to fall from the sky?

Are the rivet mandrels magnetic? Could you get them out through the 1/4 inch
hole in the center of the end plug?
Another option might be to glue them to the tube so they don't rattle
around, if
having them loose bothers you.

At one of the Southern Ontario Rebel builders meeting one of ex
Dehavilland (Spelling?) workers told a story about a set of cleco pliers
dropped into the tail section of a Dash 8 that were totally inaccessable
yet rattled around. They poured in zinc chromate and let it set up ans
then poured more until there was no more rattle. This could work for
you.

Hi gang:

The rivet mandrels are magnetic, the SS rivet sleeve itself is not.

I had a similar experience, so took a coathanger wire and put a small dab
of sticky glue on the tip, reached in thru the 1/4" center hole, and got
the maverick pieces to stick to my 'stick'. I got them out.

Here's what I did:

I tried the glue on the stick and still couldn't get much. I also tried a
shop
vac with no luck. So I drilled a larger hole in the center of the horn,
~1/2".
This still gave me plenty of edge distance for the rivets. It also allowed
me
to see where the buggers were. I nabbed them then with the glue stick.

I think you are ok if you drilled the larger hole on the outboard end of the
tube. I think the inboard end hole is used for alignment and centering of
the matching horn on the fuselage. I guess you could always make the
alignment pin larger if you had to though.
