[rebel-builders] O-360: keeping the front connected to the back

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:56 pm

No, am not aware of any improvements or upgrades to the Rebel tail for the
0360 or larger engine. There were other improvements, including Ontario mods
to strengthen it in general, and especially for when on wheels and skis. I
am also not aware of any specific limits or problems with the tail regarding
the 0360 other than it was not designed for it or tested by the factory.

However, I do know there are a few Lyc 360s on Rebels for several years now,
and have not heard of any problems. I also know (and saw it) of a Cont 6 cyl
210 hp 360 on a Rebel floatplane in Arlington, Wa. This one is still fairly
new and I think first flew this spring.

But you can bet I will be watching my backside carefully, for any signs of
stress or wear.

I understand the Moose initially had some issues with the M14 on the tail
and they showed up as cracks, which then required changes.

I want the extra power for take-off at higher alpine lakes (where power
available is way less). In cruise, I will still be going slower than most
320 wheeled Rebels. So my full power time will probably be fairly low.
Otherwise, my current 320 is more than enough power for an amphib Rebel.

Walter

Hi Walter,
Have you (or anyone else) looked into the limits or improving the limits on
keeping the tail on the plane with increased HP up front? Are there any
advised upgrades besides trading your plane for an Elite? Or limiting
power at lower altitude?
-Ben
