Roger.
Why would one need more than 120 gallons of fuel in a Moose??? I don't
know if the wings were designed for the stress of extra weight in the end of
the wings. From my research I would discourage such a setup when changing
my Moose configuration I really studied them.... JMHO Dale SR-033 N269DF

I tend to agree with Dale. Especially since the last few feet of the wings
are actually "extensions" added on to the main and front spars. There is
much less strength in that extended region than the rest of the wing, IMHO.

Roger,

I am not an expert on this subject but.................

Call Daryl and ask him what he thinks on this subject.

There is always the issue of loads and where they are placed.

The wing of the Moose/Rebel is designed to take a certain load and when you put x amount of weight "way" out there you might be heading into the grey or even "black" area.

If I needed too add a "whole" bunch of fuel capacity I might think of a centerline tank, under the fusalage or even some tanks hanging under the wings. Both of those options can be accomplished with some planning.

Just a thought from a man who did not build my own Moose but have dead sticked em twice...

Good luck,
Eddie Moran

Thanks guys for the comments. I did contact the guys at Murphy and
was told that others had done 20 gal tanks and they can see no problem adding
even more weight at the end of the wing. So long as they were not full
when landing as a hard landing may extend past the allowable negative g-forces
on the wing. So maybe a procedure that requires tip fuel be used/dumped
before landing.

And by the way, I need the fuel to cover a 2100nm leg so I'll need more than
just wing tanks.

Where ya going? Sounds exciting. Don't forget you will likely need to rig
a system to allow adding oil in flight. Carefully compute your oil usage
before you go because you will have to just estimate when to add it. Unless
you plan on constant tailwinds I'll wager you are looking at well over 15
hours of continuous flying. More like 17 or 18 hours. I'd guess you're
looking at well over 250 gallons of fuel plus reserves. You'll have tanks
in the fuselage for sure. You probably already looked into "ferry kits"
that can be rented with immersion suit, HF radio, and other stuff so you
don't have to buy it. I'm intensely curious and interested in the trip.
I'll bet the others want to hear too.

It seems like a ferry tank in the fuselage would be a lot simpler. I assume
you are not flying 2100 mile legs regularly? Also, it seems like if Murphy
is worried about -G loads from landings that turbulence would be a worry as
well.

Rumor mill has the following info:

Folks at Morgan Aviation were working on adding another section in the wings
for wet tanks.

Sebastian was working on them personally with the guidance of Brian Godden &
Dave Morgan.

I suggest contacting Brian Godden for more info.

[rebel-builders] Moose Tip Tanks

If all goes well and I'm happy with my final build job, the plan is to fly
across the Pacific from Australia to the USA.

I'm exploring all possibilities and have plumbed a ferry tank inlet from the
cabin already. The problem is that this will put me way out of C of G if
I put the 250 gal in the cabin. So I'm looking for other places closer to
the C of G for fuel. Also looking at fuel tank seats and belly tank/drop
tanks etc.

And yes Mike I've set up an oil tank top up system into the cabin with an
electronic level check in the oil tank so this means more weight in the
cabin for the reserve oil.

This is the first time I've posted on this list and I really appreciate all
the input.

thanks
Roger K
