[rebel-builders] Rebel -final drilling wing bolts

Hi Jesse !

I guess you know that you have to make up a spacer to
fill that large gap on the front wing attach fittings ...
some have machined a chunk of aluminum to have a tab
extending to hold - in effect, a very thick-walled tube with
a small side handle - others have just stacked washers &
epoxied them together. Some have also machined
Delrin to fit - but it's a bit soft for the job...

The spacer is to fill the gap and prevent the bolt
from crushing the tabs, when tightened.

if I can drill/ream everything separately. Doing it assembled sounds
better, but I don't know how I would keep everything from moving while
drilling. For example, if I remove the bolt from the front wing attachment
then how do I immobilize that joint while drilling? There is a large gap
between the fittings, and so no way to clamp them tight. The rear fitting
and the struts may be easier because they all have a close fit, but still
seems a bit harry trying to keep it together with no bolts.
Thanks

[rebel-builders] Rebel -final drilling wing bolts

Bob,
Yes, I do know about the spacers. I haven't made them yet, and I don't have
a machine shop handy to make fancy ones with a tab, so it seems like it
would be difficult to keep everything in alignment while drilling (wing
fitting, fuse fitting, and two spacers) I guess I will drill everything
separately, except maybe the rear fittings so I will have a chance to make a
small correction to the incidence if necessary. When I first put the wings
on, the rear fittings were not permanently installed so that I could make
larger adjustments by moving their location (up, down, in out). I did all
the measurements as the manual suggests, and then just drilled 2 holes per
side through the bulkheads at #30 to cleco in place. I ended up moving the
left one down about 1/8" to get the incidence to match within .1 degree
which is the limit of my digital level. So now I have permanently installed
the rear fittings in the bulkheads, and riveted the roof on. Things tend to
move slightly as you build, so hopefully the incidence will still match, but
I want the option to adjust the bolt holes slightly if needed. It looks like
I need another temporary wing installation anyway to finish up the torque
tube installation.
I have a side question about the front fittings. The forward fitting plate
on the fuselage sandwitches the roof skin onto the top carrythrough. This
creates a bit of a mismatch at the fitting. Should I put a little .020
packer in at the attach point, or just bolt it together and let that plate
twist a bit?
Thanks.
Jesse
