Hi Tom ,, I will measure my oil cooler in the morning it is a little larger
then needed with normal IO-540 but it was included with the firewall
forward and was used on an ag plane so it should be large enough.. Dale

[rebel-builders] lSR/Moose Oil Cooler

Hi Tom;
There are several places to mount them.
1) Below and outboard of the governor in front of #2 cylinder. Like the
182RG (My preference)
2) On the firewall behind #5 cylinder, use at least a 4" scat duct to
feed it. Like pre 1977 172's did.
3)Mount to the rear baffling at # 5 cylinder like the 1978 and later
172's did, (this improved cooling by about 2 needle widths on the oil
temp gage when we relocated them on the 1977 models.
4) some of the Pipers have them on the F/W with a separate air scoop
feeding it from the side of the lower cowl.

I would suggest looking at a few production planes and using their
proven technology, (then you won't need to re-invent the wheel). Use
the largest size that you can fit in the space you choose. If it is too
small it will over heat if it is big the vernatherm will control it.

I'm looking for any recommendations for oil cooler make, size, and
installation on a SR/Moose with an IO-540 engine. My plane will
eventually
be on Montana floats, In the archives I noticed Al Paxia had similar
questions some time ago; so Al, if you see this, could you also comment
on
what you found out?
Thanks,

Can't comment very well on the IO-540 or what effect floats would have (I
have standard O-540, 2 blade, C/S prop, on conventional gear), but with the
standard FWF kit from MAM, I've never had any oil temp problems (based in
Florida where it's always warm). My oil cooler is on the right rear baffle.

[rebel-builders] lSR/Moose Oil Cooler

Hi Tom and Richard,

I've just ordered a Positech P2008C oil cooler for cooling my IO-540 engine.
I've had concerns about the oil cooler setup since it seems that everyone
I've spoken to with I/O-540 engines have had to make mods to deal with high
oil temperatures in the summer. I was going to do 2) but I probably need
4.5" or larger scat. I've concerns that taking this much air from the rear
baffle might have the engine run hotter. I'm considering doing a variation
of 4). Some builder have used a NACA inlet for the oil cooler but I don't
think this has worked to well, as the NACA is a low drag inlet and not a
scoop. I would use some sort of scoop for extra ram pressure. This probably
increases cooling drag but this is probably inconsequential compared to
floats. I would sure like to hear from anyone who has solved this problem.

Yes Tom,, There are no number or markings on the cooler that I could find
but the measurements of the fin assembly not the ends is 5 1/2 X 7 1/2
according to lycoming this is more then sufficent but they would rather one
this size then a smaller then required cooler... Hope this helps Dale

Tom,

Suppliers are recommending large oil coolers for the 300hp IO-540 engines.
Positech recommends the P20008C. Pacific Oil Coolers recommends the Stewart
Warner SW 10614R or the Aero Classic 8000353. It appears that some builders
are successful with one size smaller but for slow on floats I've choosen the
larger size.
