Drill stop crack in windshield?

When I had my Champ on floats I had the same problem with cracks emitting from the bolt holes even though I oversized the holes. The solution I found to be the best rather than drilling the crack was to melt a hole through the Plexiglas. This would not create any small fractures as a drilled hole would that will spread in the future. Heating up a small finishing nail with the torch works just fine.
