Rivet resolution !!
Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:56 pm
Thanks to everyone for their help with the rivet problem !!
====== --------
Murphy had no problems with the original testing of the RU
rivets, and have used them for some time, with several aircraft completed
without difficulties. Then we started to see random problems of a
few bad rivets, and, lately, many of you have reported almost constant
problems....
The factory have had meetings with RU, and presented your comments,
as well as their own test results. It seems obvious that there is now
a quality control problem with this manufacturer.
<MY IMPRESSION> is that RU consider the protruding heads to be
a "cosmetic" problem !! While this IS true, in internal areas, it
certainly IS NOT just 'cosmetic' on the OUTSIDE !! In any case, they
don't seem to be too concerned...
The Murphy factory folks have decided to look after us builders,
in any case, and have asked anyone who has a problem batch of rivets to
contact them for a Return Authorization, and they will REPLACE THE BAD
RIVETS we send back to them. (It sounds like they may have to 'eat' this
cost - but feel it is a matter of reputation, whether RU agrees or not !)
For many reasons, Murphy have decided that ALL future kits will
have <only> AVEX rivets ...
Because of the problems with these rivets, Murphy staff reviewed
the quality of joint produced, and feel that there is no structural
problem with these rivets that have already been used. Although
they don't look as good, they have apparently tested to be strong &
safe. In fact, most of them worked properly on thicknesses over .045,
and are still suitable for those joints, and non-visible locations.
There is a detailed letter from Tech. Support on the Murphy
web site, under Support/What's New ....
There are also several NEW notes in this area, including many
UPDATES TO MANUALS, for Rebel, Elite, & Super Rebel !! We are starting
to see the results of our feedback, and the selection of Brian Godden
as supervisor of Tech Support. !! I believe we are moving into a new
era of improved support for builders. It was always good, but it looks
like it will be even better from now on !!
So - another fast response from a stable, ethical kit manufacturer !!
Call Tech Support & let them know how many rivets you have to return,
get an RA, and - enjoy building & flying your Murphy Rebel, Renegade, Maverick,
Elite, or Super Rebel !!!
Thanks again for helping the factory to try to get satisfaction
from this supplier !
